Practical but pricey
OrderWe live in a time when AI tools and smart home appliances are blooming. In such a blooming market, it’s difficult to find the best options when it comes to special and luxurious smart solutions. When it comes to smart shades and blinds, there are names such as IKEA that come to mind quite fast, but what if you need a more premium quality option with more unique features? That’s what Weffort Shades tries to address with their Motorized Roller Shades.
Weffort Shades has a wide variety of smart window treatments, such as roller shades, cellular shades, zebra shades, dual shades, woven wood shades, as well as outdoor shades. The unit requested for review was a smart roller shade with blackout linen. Of course, when it comes to ordering customized home solutions, the most difficult thing is the measurements because a tiny error could have catastrophic results that make your newly purchased piece almost useless. To avoid this, Weffort Shades’ ordering page comes with a ton of instructions and options to choose from. There are measurement guides for both mounting the shades inside or outside the window pane, and the height and width of the shades can be precisely customized to the customer’s liking. The unit I received was perfectly fitting my two-panel balcony door window.

When it comes to fabric type, there are multiple options to choose from based on the type of shade. I wanted something to completely cut off all the light when the shades were closed, because the balcony door window faces my TV, and I didn’t want reflections on the screen when I played games or watched movies. To that end, I went with blackout linen, which came with three different colors. The quality of the linen is not something out of the ordinary, as it is mostly a layer of linen on a base sheet of very thick industrial paper. That means the linen could be torn if it is not handled with care. But the results and the looks are premium. The blackout name truly fits the piece as it makes my living room as dark as a movie theater when the shades are down, no matter the time of the day.

A key feature in a motorized system is, of course, the motor. Weffort Shades excels in this aspect as well, in both quality and quantity. No matter the situation and needs, Weffort Shades has the right motor for it. Their smart blinds come with DC, AC, and solar panel power supplies as well as a recent Matter over Ethernet option, which provides power and data transmission all through a single Ethernet cable connected to the motor. Since I didn’t want any wire connected to my blinds from a wall socket or power adapter/power bank, I chose the DC motor equipped with a solar panel. The panel size is 36.8×6 cm, and it can stick to the window to not only provide constant power to the motor’s battery but also get covered by the shade’s valance perfectly. This option provides both elegance and sustainability at the same time.
Installation of the shades was also quite easy. The mounts could be screwed to the wall or ceiling and the shades would be mounted and held in place easily depending on their size. Since the blinds I ordered were for a balcony door, they were long and heavy, thus needing at least two people to lift and mount them. But based on my experience, the smaller ones could be handled perfectly by one person. It should be added that the packaging was also impressive, as the shades and motor were well packed and protected by thick layers of rubber corner protection, cartons, and plastics.

Last but not least are the smart features. While the blinds can be controlled by a variety of optional remote-control types, including 5 to 8-channel as well as dial remotes, there are also multiple smart solutions to choose from. Weffort Shades supports multiple smart solutions, including Alexa, HomeKit, Google Assistant, Samsung’s SmartThings, and ZigBee devices akin to Philips’ Hue system. It should be noted that the smart solution needed should be chosen beforehand, as it is paired with the motor and cannot be changed later. The smart solution can easily pair with the respective cellphone apps or smart hubs and not only be controlled with voice commands and virtual remote controls, but also assigned automations, which will allow the blinds to be opened and closed under certain conditions and at certain times of the day.
With all the customization options and optional elements comes a relatively heavy price tag. Weffort Shades is by no means a cheap or even affordable smart solution as it will cost more than twice as much as an IKEA smart blind with the same size. The one I ordered for the 230×200 cm balcony door with the optional solar panel, 5-channel remote, and a square valance to cover the motor bars costs more than $600.

The other downside is the order handling. I strongly recommend contacting the support or reading through all measurements and smart solution guides on the website before finalizing your order. Because all the customization options and how they fit together the best could be confusing for many. I also had a real headache with my order since the type of motor they sent was an AC motor, while I ordered a DC motor to be paired with the solar panel. When trying to rectify this error, Weffort Shades sent a separate motor, which again did not support the Solar Panel, and the third time, they sent a completely new unit, which made me take down the old one and install the new one. This mishandling of the order not only caused a significant delay in the process but also made me end up with a spare smart blind taking a considerable space in my storage.

They not only have something to offer for every situation, but their solutions are highly customizable, which is quite important when it comes to products that, in addition to meeting daily needs, also play an important role in giving our private spaces a cozier and more beautiful look.
