What’s New in Overwatch Season 2: Summit?

Last season, Overwatch 2 made a dramatic return as just “Overwatch” and dropped a generous heaping of lore, quests, and five new heroes. The difference was night and day. Famine to feast.

Now, Season 2 of “Overwatch” has dropped, but with a smaller offering (which makes sense). Instead of five new heroes, it’s one. Instead of a massive questline, it’s back to smaller quests, but all in all, it’s still far more than they were offering before the rebrand. So is it enough to compete with Marvel Rivals?

Let’s break down what they’ve added:

New Additions in Overwatch Season 2: Summit

All major changes in Overwatch Season 2: Summit

  • New Characters: Sierra. Similar to Soujourn in a lot of ways, Sierra is high-mobility with her grappling-hook-style drone and mid-range rifle. She’s an easy character to learn for Soldier: 76 fans, but she does lean into Overwatch’s new interest in vertical mobility (likely to compete with the likes of Marvel Rivals’ Iron Man and Angela).

Ramratta has also been added to Stadium mode.

  • Accolades Are Back: The long-awaited return of the flashy post-match voting system is here. You can now vote your favourite player to the top to MVP.
    • Two new mythics: A skin Soldier: 76 (Volted Overdrive), and a sword for Genji (Sumi-ichimonji). Both are cool but not the coolest skins of the season (too bad the blade doesn’t have colour options).
    • Map Changes: Antarctic Peninsula has been given a new coat of paint (but plays the same), and Lijiang Night Market has been added to stadium mode.
    • New Battlepass: The theme is Spring Fairy, and reception is mixed. This writer could take or leave it, but it’s nice to get a new skin for the Peruvian Illari.
    • A Second Diablo Collab: No freebies, but for fans, there’s five new skins: Mauga, Lifeweaver, Brigette, Ramattra, and Freya. The old skins return too (along with some new Sakura store skins and more Rainy Day skins).
    • A Story Event Questline (Watchpoint: Grand Mesa): Nothing too exciting here, just standard daily and weekly style missions. Some nice loot though, here’s what you can get:
      • 1 Epic Lootbox
      • 1 Legendary Lootbox
      •  Rare Title
      • 3 Battle Pass Tier Skips
      • 2 Sierra voicelines
      • 1 Sierra Spray
      • 1 Sierra Avatar
      • 1 Sierra Namecard

Conclusion? Not bad.

It’s a step down from last season, but why wouldn’t it be? Season 1 was a flashy return and battle cry, now they’re settling it for regular (improved) programming. A new hero every season is a nice change, and so is the lore. Everything else is pretty superficial, but all together it says that the devs are listening and have stopped resting on their laurels. A good sign of what’s to come. For the full details (and some pretty minor Perk changes), see the patch notes here.
