Inside Aardman

With the ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) announcing that the Australian season of Wallace & Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman would be extended until January 2018, we decided to check out this amazing exhibition. There’s a total of 350 objects and 50 set pieces perfectly set out at ACMI that really triggers your fond memories of these amusing characters. I was even surprised to find the grandfather of clay animation, Morph who was hidden in this exhibition.

Billed as Wallace & Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman, this exhibition is a celebration and also the 40th birthday of one of the world’s most popular animation studios that spawned classic series such as Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep. At its core, this exhibition is a journey into the mind and heart of this animation company which boasts early sketches, drawing boards, gigantic wall posters and actual props used in the creation of this classic animation series plus lots more!

As soon as you walk down the stairs at ACMI and enter the Wallace & Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman, you immediately know that you are in for treat as not only are the exhibits informative but they tell the story of how these clay objects came to life. However the highlight of the exhibition (for me anyway) are the Wallace & Gromit pieces which are truly stunning.

Seeing these pieces in real-life makes you appreciate the amazing work that went into these creations and more importantly, it brought back fond memories of the adventures of Wallace & Gromit and Friends.

In order to thoroughly immerse yourself into this exhibition, you really need to allow several hours to absorb the ambience of this fantastical and whimsical experience. Add in a giant pirate ship from The Pirates! Band of Misfits plus the ability to create your own stop motion character and Wallace & Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman really should be on your radar, especially if you’re a fan of the works of this animation studio.

Wallace & Gromit and Friends: The Magic of Aardman is extended strictly until 29 January 2018. For tickets and information please visit acmi.net.au.
