The Hobbit- A Graphic Novel (Revised and Expanded) Review

Originally released in 1990, The Hobbit Graphic Novel is a gorgeous representation of the Tolkien classic adapted by Charles Dixon and illustrated by David Wenzel. The just released Revised and Expanded edition published by HarperCollins brings this modern classic – officially licensed by the Tolkien Estate –  into a premium hardcover format and with new Backstory and Creating the Artwork sections authored and penned by David Wentzel.

These new sections are the star of this nearly 190-page show. Wentzel opens the curtains to meticulously explain his artistic processes and visual storytelling approaches, accompanied by an array of stunning character, environment and story evolution art to complete the literal image. This alone justifies the reasonable $35US price point for such solid looks into the mind of a legendary artist.

Wentzel’s art is whimsically painted and presented, with emphasis on character facial expression, color contrast, and subtle light nuance. This quality of the page material and still terrific hand lettering of Bill Pearson combine to ensure everything is easily read and simultaneously appreciated. This graphic novel truly feels Hobbit, capturing the essence of Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin and friends, and the ultimate triumph Smaug.

Being a shorter book, The Hobbit Graphic Novel didn’t need to make too many content trimming decisions for the better. Arguably the greatest aspect of The Hobbit  is Tolkien’s wordsmith genius, and the Graphic Novel matches it with Wentzel’s fabulous brushstrokes to form a perfect marriage. There is also something to be said about solid binding, and this version certainly has it down to an array of lettering including Tolkien logo. I literally couldn’t put this down from start to fantastic finish…and then Wentzel’s after party.

Final Thoughts?

If you’ve missed out on this fantastic graphic novel until now, this Revised and Expanded version is highly recommended. “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
