Reflecting Upon the Art...

With EA’s Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst recently released, now is the ideal time to pick up The Art of Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst, a 204 page art book that showcases the myriad of different designs for the character of Faith and a whole bevy of incredible concept art for fans to pore over.

It’s fascinating seeing how the designs progress until the point where they appear in the game and the book comes packed to the brim with insights from the developers, overviews of elements of Faith’s design and the aesthetics of the City of Glass.

It’s incredibly interesting reading the small paragraphs about the different design philosophies that informed each sector of the city, although I did slightly lament that there weren’t more lengthy text sections but the sheer beauty of the art on display more than makes up for this.

There’s also a selection of storyboards and different character designs for not only Faith but also the game’s supporting cast such as Birdman, Nomad and Plastic. The conceptualisation process of the game’s sleek visuals is finely detailed and offers any Mirror’s Edge fan a unique insight into the immense amount of work from the visual design department that goes into creating a game.

Tiny incidental details in the game that are often overlooked by players, such as the design of Faith’s carry bag or even simply her hairstyle, go through so many iterations and such an intensive approval process that it gives readers a greater appreciation for collections such as this, otherwise many of these concept pieces would have been lost to the ether, which, given the quality on display here, would have been a grand disservice.

Ideal as a companion piece to your digital return to the world of underground runners and the dystopian, capitalist world that necessitates their services, The Art of Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst perfectly complements the game and is a must buy for fans of the revitalised gaming franchise.
