One smart ring!
The smart ring market has reached a new level with the release of the Oura Ring 5, an iteration that feels like a genuine leap forward in a category stuck in a loop of minor incremental updates. While wrist-bound trackers constantly demand your attention (not that this is a bad thing at times), Oura’s latest flagship takes a completely opposite approach, delivering elite-tier health metrics while melting seamlessly into your daily life.
Oura Ring 5 Review
For years, the biggest barrier to entry for many potential users was sheer bulk as previous generations often felt too massive and looked more like costume jewellery than a sleek daily accessory. The Oura Ring 5 tackles this critique head-on with a chassis that is roughly 40% smaller and lighter, successfully crossing the line from a clunky piece of wearable tech into the realm of high-end jewellery. Interestingly, Oura has also reduced its sizing range with this latest smart ring, limiting the range to a tighter 6–13 bracket, meaning users who require a size 4 or 5 will find themselves locked out of this generation; however, the Ring 4 is still available to accommodate those smaller sizes. Our previous Oura 4 review can be found here if you’re interested.
However, before you can start your new next-gen smart ring experience, you do need to purchase the sizing kit to find your perfect size and Oura recommends that you wear the “test” ring for at least 24 hours on your index finger and on your non-dominant hand and with that said, you can wear the ring on any finger but to capture the strongest data signals for sleep, heart rate and temperature, the index finger is the best.
Unboxing
Once unleashed from its packaging, the Oura Ring 5 looks like a premium jewellery piece and inside the ring, you can see some of the amazing tech that will track your biometrics. It is also available in an array of six distinct colours and textures to match any personal style. Users can choose from the Glossy Classics of timeless, high-shine Black and Silver; the Premium Mattes featuring a satin-like Stealth (matte black) and a beautifully textured Brushed Silver (reviewed) with dynamic vertical brushing or the Luxury Tones, which introduce a redesigned, lighter Gold alongside the stunning new copper-toned Deep Rose.
But the real magic isn’t just how it looks, it is how it feels during the daily grind and unlike other smart rings on the market that feature intrusive sensor bumps or a bulky profile that pinches when you grip a steering wheel, the Oura Ring 5 is truly a “wear and forget” device. You put it on, it sits naturally on your finger and it quietly tracks your biometrics in the background without you ever noticing it is there.
My real-world testing highlights just how unobtrusive this new design actually is, as the lower profile easily handles the physical, chaotic routines of daily life without grinding against adjacent fingers. It proves exceptionally comfortable for overnight sleep tracking and shows surprising versatility during active fitness routines where rings are typically removed to prevent pinching. Instead, the Ring 5’s uniform titanium exterior build paired with an enhanced scratch-resistant PVD coating allows it to remain perfectly comfortable during both weightlifting and even gardening plus yardwork.
This impressive downsizing stands as a technological achievement, mostly because it was accomplished without sacrificing a single day of battery life. Oura completely re-engineered the ring’s internals by utilising precision-engineered, low-profile internal sensor domes that measure just 0.7 mm, ensuring a snug, gap-free fit while eliminating the harsh skin indentations common in older tech. Tech enthusiasts will notice that Oura actually scaled back the internal architecture from the previous generation’s 18 signal pathways down to 12 optimised pathways, but they cleverly offset this reduction by deploying larger photodetectors and sensor LEDs that are four times more powerful to dramatically increase accuracy across a wider range of skin tones.
Because it is designed to be worn 24/7 for optimal health tracking, a smart ring lives or dies by its endurance, and the battery life here is nothing short of phenomenal. It comfortably delivers 6 to 9 days of continuous use on a single charge depending on your ring size, meaning you only need to look for the sleek charging dock about once a week, heavily reinforcing that pure “set and forget” luxury. In terms of charging a totally flat battery will take up to 80-minutes via the included charger and according to Oura, the lithium polymer batteries perform best when kept between 25% and 80%, with many users find that placing the ring on the charger for just 10 to 20 minutes a day allows them to ensure almost 24×7 usage 7 days a week.
Setup
The initial setup is incredibly easy, pairing effortlessly via Bluetooth in just a couple of minutes before walking you through your focus area such as being more focused, energetic, athletic or to develop your learning. Once you’re in, the companion Oura app is a very well-designed app that makes it easy to navigate, including categorising your data into distinct daily scores such as sleep, readiness and activity. There are also in-app and push notifications which are perfectly timed and actionable, offering smart nudges like a friendly reminder to stretch if you’ve been sedentary for 50 minutes, a heads-up when your optimal nightly “bedtime window” is approaching, or low-battery alerts sent a few hours before bed so you’re never caught off guard. Another thoughtful feature is the emails that offer deep-dive summaries into your recovery trends and highlight actionable health patterns that help you make real-world adjustments.

Live tracking is another highlight of the Oura Ring 5 and wearers can now initiate a workout directly within the app, using their smartphone to monitor real-time metrics. The integration supports lock-screen widgets to keep pace, distance and split times visible at a glance during a run or cycle. Furthermore, the ecosystem now allows you to connect external, third-party heart rate monitors directly to the app, offering increased functionality that fitness enthusiasts will appreciate or those monitoring their hearth.

Beyond daily fitness, the software continues to prioritise a passive tracking philosophy that translates complex biometric data into clear, holistic wellness insights. The platform retains its celebrated ability to predict oncoming health issues via its updated Symptom Radar feature, while expanding into a much broader, medical-adjacent health platform that leans heavily into comprehensive cardiovascular health. Under its new Health Radar platform, the app tracks nighttime blood pressure trends, Cardio Capacity (VO2 Max) and long-term arterial ageing, while sleep tracking receives a significant clinical upgrade through a partnership with sleep health giant ResMed to track intricate nighttime breathing disturbances over a rolling 30-day window.
Cooking, Sports, Jedi, Pets, Coffee, Work … life!
Furthermore, Oura has expanded its specialised software tracking ecosystems by introducing structured Menopause Insights which utilise the Menopause Impact Scale to contextualise shifts in sleep, mood and biometrics, alongside a dedicated Hormonal Birth Control feature that intelligently recalibrates cycle baselines for users on oral or long-acting contraceptives. Modern health trends are also fully embraced via new GLP-1 Insights, letting users map weight-loss medication doses and side effects directly alongside their long-term muscle preservation, while a new interactive Brain Health study helps track cognitive patterns over time.
Who needs a smartwatch?
The ecosystem also gains further depth through its Lab Uploads feature, allowing users to import actual bloodwork data directly into the app to map clinical results alongside daily health trends. To tie this together, an AI-powered Oura Advisor health coach provides personalised data trends, while a partnership with Counsel Health enables users in supported regions to transition from AI summaries directly into live, on-demand chats with licensed medical professionals. Crucially, as the app moves into these sensitive medical spaces, Oura has introduced granular, time-based data deletion, allowing users to wipe health metrics from a specific window of time without erasing their multi-year historical data.
As you can see, Oura has crammed quite a bit into this tiny ring, which does set it apart from its competitors but these technological and software advancements do come at a cost, as the baseline Black and Silver models start at $399 / £399 / AU$649, while the premium finishes climb to $499 / £499 / AU$798. The other additional cost is that users must also purchase an ongoing membership fee of $5.99 / £5.99 / AU$9.99 per month (or AU$109.99 annually) to unlock anything beyond basic metrics, but many other companies offer a similar model. Given the amount of data it can monitor, it is definitely worth the entry price alone.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, the Oura Ring 5 serves as a strategic power move in an increasingly crowded market and by offering this hardware generation sooner than many expected, Oura has surprised the industry with its amazing technology in such a small smart ring. If you’re looking for the best smart ring on the market at the moment and you are willing to pay a premium for a refined, dainty aesthetic, an ultra-intuitive app interface and elite health tracking, the Oura Ring 5 boasts the current pinnacle of wearable design, comfortably extending the brand’s lead in the industry… or as Sauron said in J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, “one (smart) ring to rule them all.”
