MICF: Introducing Azeem Banatwalla: A Triple Threat at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival

One of India’s premier stand-up artists, Azeem Banatwalla is set to make his first-ever solo run at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival this year! His debut show, ‘Triple Threat’ casts a uniquely satirical lens on his lived reality as an ethnic minority trying to have a voice in an increasingly intolerant India.

Through ‘Triple Threat’, Azeem sheds light on the identity crisis of a reluctant Indian, a feminist Muslim, and a censored Comedian. From this distinctly intersectional position, he finds himself trying to speak truth to power – against his better judgement.

Venue: Tasma Terrace 3, 5 Parliament Pl, East Melbourne, VIC 3000

Dates: 8-21 April, 7.10pm

Azeem has previously performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2018 as part of the cast of Comedy Zone Asia. A stalwart of the Indian comedy scene for over 12 years, he has two Amazon Prime Video specials to his name – ‘Cometh the Hour’ (2017) and ‘Problems’ (2019) – as well as writing credits for ‘Eternally Confused and Eager For Love’ on Netflix (IN). A part of the very popular Indian comedy YouTube group East India Comedy, he was the creative director and head writer of the critically acclaimed news comedy show ‘EIC Outrage’. Widely renowned as one of India’s sharpest and most consistent comedy writers and performers, his stand-up videos on YouTube have well over 10 million views over the past decade. Azeem is also the founder and co-host of the cult football podcast 44Two.

His current touring show ‘Minor Celebrity’ has sold over 6,000 tickets worldwide between August 2022 and March 2024, including a run at the Soho Theatre (London). Through quality and consistency, Azeem has been building up a head of steam and is now ready to take the international stage by storm, starting with ‘Triple Threat’ at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
