EAST GIPPSLAND WINTER FESTIVAL’S EPIC OPENER!
East Gippsland Winter Festival Ignites the Season with Art, Fire, Food and Community Spirit
East Gippsland is gearing up for a month of glowing skies, creative energy and winter magic as the 2026 East Gippsland Winter Festival returns from 19 June to 19 July. Now in its sixth year, the festival has grown into one of regional Victoria’s standout winter celebrations — a testament to resilience, creativity and the power of community.
A Weekend of Wonder to Kick Things Off
The opening weekend (Friday 19 June – Sunday 21 June) sets the tone with a packed program showcasing the region’s art, food, culture and wild natural beauty.
On Sunday, travellers can take a scenic drive into the High Country for the Great Alpine Scarecrow Building Workshop in Swifts Creek — a hands‑on creative escape perfect for families and makers. Those seeking something quieter can unwind at the Winter Solstice Mini Retreat at Bloom in Orbost, offering space to pause and reflect as the solstice approaches.
If lakeside indulgence is more your style, Metung’s Yacht Club hosts a relaxed Paint & Sip session overlooking the Gippsland Lakes, while adventure lovers can hit the water for the Kayak to Koho experience at Lakes Entrance.
That’s just a taste of the first three days of HOW WE WINTER, with more than 100 events running across the month. Visitors can explore the full program at egwinterfest.com.au.
Festival Founder Celebrates Six Years of Growth
Born from the aftermath of the devastating 2019/20 Black Summer Bushfires, the festival has become a symbol of renewal. Founder Adam Bloem says the milestone reflects the strength of the region.
“Reaching our sixth year is a significant milestone. Thanks to the incredible contributions of so many people and organisations, the East Gippsland Winter Festival has grown into a flagship event for the region, driving visitation, supporting local businesses and artists, and fostering joy and a strong sense of community resilience.”
The East Gippsland Shire Council continues to champion the festival through its Pathways to Growth Program. Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth says the event showcases the creativity and spirit of towns across the shire.
Friday 19 June: A Spectacular Start
The festival launches with the sold‑out Nicholson Trestle Bridge Long Lunch, an elevated dining experience overlooking the Nicholson River. As the sun sets, locals and visitors head to Boots & Beers in Buchan for a classic country‑pub night out.
Art lovers can explore multiple exhibitions, including South East NOW 2026 at the East Gippsland Art Gallery and the Colours of Winter exhibition at the Great Alpine Gallery. Mallacoota also comes alive with its three‑day Winter Solstice celebrations at the Mallacoota Arts Space.
Saturday 20 June: Fire, Folklore and Flavour
Saturday begins with a bracing splash at the Gippsland Jersey Winter Dip in Lakes Entrance — a refreshing way to welcome winter. From there, the region heats up with the Bruthen Medieval Winter Fire Festival, complete with sword fighting, music, folklore and a massive bonfire.
Wine lovers can savour the Tasting of Vintage East Gippsland Wines at Nicholson River Winery, while families can get creative at the Lantern Making Workshop at Echo Bend Camping Park. Lakes Entrance also hosts the launch of the Night Frock at Iceworks exhibition, blending fashion, art and history.
A Festival Built on Community
Supported by the Victorian State Government, East Gippsland Shire Council, Metung Hot Springs and Saltwater Properties, the festival continues to grow as a major cultural and tourism drawcard.
With events spanning food, art, music, wellness, adventure and family activities, HOW WE WINTER invites everyone to experience the wild, warm and wonderfully creative spirit of East Gippsland.
