Summary: Injustice 2 #4 serves as an interesting filler as Tom Taylor helps fill some of the gaps

A filler

Complimenting the blockbuster video game Injustice 2, writer Tom Taylor and penciller Daniel Sampere return to this strange world where Superman is the villain and Batman is… well Batman… just more bad ass! Injustice 2 #4 commences in a secret location as Deadshot (aka Floyd Lawton) questions Harley Quinn with a gun as to why she hit him with a bat. Harley on the other hand doesn’t give a damn about what Lawton wants, however “Batman” does intervene as the Joker’s former lover is taken to meet the villainous Ra’s Al Ghul (aka… the ‘Person in Charge’).

“Stand Down. Or I will stand you down permanently”
– Batman

Our cliche Ra’s questions the worth of humanity as Harley jokes with his over the top speech before asking why Poison Ivy is hanging around with this ancient psychopath. To make matters worse, Ra’s has Harley’s daughter Lucy who threatens her in order for Harley to do what he wants. However Harley sees through Ra’s guise and believes should he kill Lucy, the heroes that follow him would be unlikely to follow his Dystopian lead. In some clever writing by Taylor, our former psychiatrists has a moment of clarity before unleashing her fury against Ra’s with a thoroughly powerful headbutt after he politely described that Harley and the Joker killed millions of people in Metropolis.

“I hope you have a little Lazarus pit mouthwash to rebirth those teeth, you ****”
Harley Quinn

Needless to say, some of the followers of Ra’s don’t take kindly to their leader being attacked, however her close friend Poison Ivy protects Harley in order to make her reason with him. Emotionally, Harley discloses to Ra’s that Superman was meant to save the day from the Joker and her on that fateful day. Ra’s the ultimate puppetmaster gives Harley the opportunity to make amends for her sins. The second part of the story revolves around THE Batman which helps piece together some previous events in this universe. There’s also a touching moment between Alfred and Bruce as he reminiscences about his son that was inspired by Dinah (Black Canary) and Oliver Queen’s (Green Arrow) son Connor who mentions chores. This of course inspires our hero to give Connor a tracking device as the issue abruptly ends.

“Dick wasn’t already a trained assassin!”
Robin (Damian Wayne)

Final Thoughts?

Injustice 2 #4 is beautifully illustrated by Daniel Sampere who really captures the soul of the DC Universe and even though this is not the world we all know and love, it’s familiar yet equally disturbing. Writer Tom Taylor also excels at bringing these characters to life and really gets inside their heads. My only gripe with the issue is that it ends without a real resolution for either Bruce or Harley but as they say in the funny books… to be continued!
