Hands-On: Four Hours with The Blood of Dawnwalker
Thanks to Bandai Namco Australia, we were recently invited to their Sydney offices for an extensive four-hour hands-on session with Rebel Wolves’ highly anticipated debut title, The Blood of Dawnwalker. Launching on September 3, 2026, this dark-fantasy RPG immediately showcases the prestigious pedigree of its creators. Led by former Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, the game carries a familiar beloved DNA while confidently carving out a unique identity of its own.

A World on the Brink
Set against the grim backdrop of 14th-century Vale Sangora, a fictional kingdom tucked deep within the plague-ridden Carpathian Mountains—The Blood of Dawnwalker casts players as Coen, a half-human, half-vampire warrior known as a Dawnwalker.
Coen’s core objective is brutally simple, save his family within 30 days and 30 nights.
Rather than utilising a passive ticking clock, time in Vale Sangora only advances when you commit to actions that directly impact the plot which creates a tense, highly strategic, yet flexible narrative sandbox.
The kingdom itself is under the iron grip of a vampiric regime. The ancient Brencis presides over a tyrannical court alongside his inner circle that include Ambrus, Xanthe and Bakir the Mad Khan. Coen’s personal stakes are intimately tied to this landscape as his mother Esme si spiraled into despair after soldiers attempted to cull her plague-stricken daughter, only for the family to be fundamentally altered when vampires stepped in. However your choices regarding his father Pieter and siblings Lunka and Mirto will dictate the ultimate fate of his bloodline.
Human by Day, Monster by Night
The core of Dawnwalker’s gameplay loop relies entirely on its dual-form structure which fundamentally alters how you play depending on the position of the sun. During the day, Coen retains his humanity as the gameplay shifts toward social interaction, crafting, open-world exploration and grounded yet tactical swordplay. During the night, the curse takes hold as Coen unlocks his terrifying supernatural and predatory combat abilities.
One of the most satisfying aspects of the preview was Coen’s vampiric mobility. You can effortlessly wall-slide, sprint vertically up sheer stone structures and use Shadowstep to blink across gaps in a localized swirl of mist and bats. It feels incredibly slick, responsive and very cohesive.
Combat relies on deliberate, directional inputs that heavily reward precision. Parrying and blocking require a steep learning curve but once mastered, the system feels remarkably weighty. As you level up, skill points can be distributed across three distinct paths that include swordmaster, vampire and witchcraft.
A Narrative Built on Choice
Rebel Wolves explicitly describes the game as a narrative sandbox rather than a traditional, linear quest-driven RPG that allows you to decide how, when and what to pursue, though you cannot save everyone.
Your blood hunger plays a massive role in how the story unfolds. If your health drops dangerously low in a populated area, desperation might force you to feed on nearby NPCs, an act that can instantly ruin political alliances, lock out storylines or alter your family’s fate.
During our playtime, we crossed paths with Anca, a brilliantly written herbalist and potential romance option. Formerly a nun at the St. Tynaa Convent turned rogue witch, her dynamic with Coen shifts dramatically based on your willingness to look past her hidden agendas. Parallels will be made to Yennefer and Triss but Anca is her own woman.
Next-Gen Presentation and Atmosphere
Built in Unreal Engine 5, The Blood of Dawnwalker looks vastly superior to its early reveal trailers. The game’s environmental fidelity, high-resolution textures, facial animations, and mood lighting evoke the atmospheric richness of The Witcher 3 but with modern, razor-sharp execution.
The voice acting feels deeply emotive and grounded, perfectly matching a dynamic musical score that swells during intense combat and pulls back into haunting, minimalist arrangements during quiet exploration.
A New Legacy
With an estimated 50 to 70 hours of playtime, multiple vastly different endings, and a veteran development team of roughly 160 core staff, The Blood of Dawnwalker feels like the true spiritual successor to The Witcher 3 without ever feeling derivative. It is darker, tighter and brilliantly structured around its 30-day mechanics which still offers the player an amazing choice of freedom.
