Hulshult Heaven
First things first: if you’ve never played the fantastic DUSK in all its remastered glory…shame on you. The 2023 re-release brings the 2018 cult classic to high fidelity, and with it the perfect way to enjoy the blood splattered mayhem of this boomer shooter.
What also accompanies the re-release is the absolutely head banging soundtrack from gaming metal legend Andrew Hulshult. I can guarantee you’ve rocked out to his genius either via Quake Champions or Doom Eternal. Hulshult’s nearly 30 Dusk songs perfectly capture the crazed mayhem and desperate last grasp for a checkpoint, each surprisingly unique in its underlying rhythm and tempo.
For those who are vinyl fans (cough cough), few genres are represented as well as heavy metal, let alone the deep complexities that Hulshult composes. Thus, when I heard the DUSK original soundtrack was coming to a limited edition offering, a literal hell yeah (as this version limited to 666) echoed from my lips. Thank you to New Blood for making this dream a reality.
Pressed and distributed by the amazing folks at Laced Records (known for the highest‑quality game soundtracks), the audio fidelity of the 3‑LP DUSK OST set is nothing short of spectacular. Cranked up at its literal highest volume, not a single nuance of Hulshult’s excellence is lost. He also brilliantly organized the collection to his preference, meaning songs naturally flow into each other. Not a hiss or pop anywhere!
As this is my first Laced offering, I didn’t know what to expect. Presentation similarly wows. Blood splattered artwork on all, a noticeably (very!) heavyweight vinyl, and a double sleeve combine to reek of high quality. DUSK graphic novelist Jacob McManamy penned the gorgeous goth artwork on the back of each inner sleeve, art also unique to this set. If you look really closely, you’ll also see a silhouette of Hulshult on the front of each inner record sleeve.
I can’t begin to describe how much of a must‑have this is for fans of DUSK, Andrew Hulshult, or fantastic metal vinyl. This is an arguable steal at its price point of $60 US, and there’s still some stock (as of this review) left of this edition at the New Blood store for the taking.
