Broad City’s Ilana Glazer to perform at Arts Centre Melbourne on 9 June

Thursday 17 May 2018 – In an Australian exclusive, Arts Centre Melbourne and Penny Drop present Ilana Glazer, appearing at Melbourne’s Hamer Hall for a night of stand-up on 9 June 2018.

The New York-based comedian is best-known as a co-creator and co-star of the hit New York-based series, Broad City, which she produced with her creative partner Abbi Jacobson. As the headline performer at MEL&NYC, a new program of multi-disciplinary events celebrating the influence of New York City on our arts and culture, Glazer will return to the stage for an hour of stand-up.

Alumnae of the Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) theatre in Manhattan, Glazer and Jacobson first created Broad City as a web series in the early 2000’s. With the help of UCB co-founder Amy Poehler, the web series was adapted for television in 2014 and its first season was one of the highest rating programs for broadcaster Comedy Central.

Glazer and Jacobson recently announced that the forthcoming fifth season of Broad City will be the last. In its time on air, the series has been nominated for Best Comedy Series by the Writers Guild of America and for a Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy Series in 2014, the same year in which Glazer also earned a nomination for Best Actress in a comedy series.

In recent years, Glazer has also starred alongside Scarlett Johansson and Demi Moore in Sony’s Rough Night, lent her voice to the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman and co-created the Comedy Central miniseries Time Traveling Bong. She recently embarked on an 11-city comedy tour alongside Phoebe Robinson, the host of podcast Sooo Many White Guys, which Glazer produces.

This winter, leading Melbourne cultural venues and communities will come together to present MEL&NYC, an unprecedented program of events that explore culture, politics, business and everyday experience seen through the eyes of leading New Yorkers and Australians.

Extending across the city from June to August 2018, the program presents live conversations, music, performance, dining, education exchange and community participation. Program partners include: Arts Centre Melbourne, Asia Society, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Melbourne Museum, Melbourne Recital Centre, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Theatre Company, Melbourne Writers Festival, The Lowy Institute, the National Gallery of Victoria and The Wheeler Centre.

The MEL&NYC festival is supported by the Victorian Government.
