Summary:

4.5

The Boy Who Cried is written and illustrated by master scribe Khoa Le which revolves around Billy, a young boy who constantly throws tantrums when things don’t go his way and as a result, he fills his house with a river of tears. Just like the previous books by Khoa Le, this title features a lenticular cover of Billy crying and as you look at it from a variety of angles, it almost looks 3D as things move. However what sets her books apart from some others are the amazing illustrations that really help the story come to life.

As mentioned, The Boy Who Cried revolves around little Billy who would constantly cry at almost anything, whether being scolded by his mother, being picked on at school or not getting a toy from a store, this made things very difficult for our young protagonist. However when Billy’s mother refuses to buy him a toy, he starts crying and cannot stop. His cat Tubbs tries to comfort Billy but unfortunately it doesn’t work and he cries and cries and cries.

So when Billy wakes the next day, he discovers that his bedroom is filled with tears and that everything is gone as he is now in a ocean of tears. Billy then does the only thing he knows how to do best… crying and eventually he realises that tears are making things worse. So his pet cat Tubbs drinks all the tears and the fish until there are no more and from exhaustion he falls asleep. When he wakes, the world is back to normal as he runs to his parents, learning that it is okay to cry but tantrums only cause a flood of problems.

Final Thoughts?

The Boy Who Cried is a very endearing story about a young boy who learns that tantrums are not the answer to his problems that is matched with the beautiful illustrations and words of author Khoa Le.
