Beep at Arts Centre Melbourne (9 – 13 July, 2019)

The unexpected friendship between a noisy robot and a cuddly buddy called Mort will be brought to life on stage when Windmill Theatre Company’s highly imaginative award-winning family show Beep, is presented at Arts Centre Melbourne from 9 – 13 July 2019. The heart-warming tale, performed during the winter school holidays, is the perfect first theatre experience for the youngest members of the family and suitable for children aged 2 – 7 years.

The playful and highly interactive production from the makers of Grug and Grug and the Rainbow, tells a slightly sideways tale through puppetry, whimsical staging and lots of laughs about finding where you fit and learning to mix it up a little. Featuring an original story by writer Katherine Fyffe, and starring irresistibly adorable puppets in an enchanting landscape created by AACTA Award-winning designer Jonathon Oxlade, Beep is uniquely designed to surprise and delight the youngest theatre goers.

“While Grug was about an individual, this story is about community, family, friendship and what happens when someone new comes to town,” says director Sam Haren.

“Beep’s journey mirrors that of many people around the world today: her home is no longer safe, landing her in a strange new place which she must find a way to make her new home. This allows us to think about the broader idea of what “home” is for children and adults,’’ says writer Katherine Fyffe.

Beep features Windmill’s trademark inventive design, gentle storytelling, music and puppetry in a quirky and fun tale about finding one’s place in the world. In Mort’s village everything has its place, every day is the same and everyone likes it that way. Until one morning: crash, boom, bang – down comes Beep, a clattery, clanky robot girl from a strange world. He wants to know who is this noisy bucket of bolts, and how will she find her way back home?

Windmill Theatre Company, a national company based in Adelaide, has established a global reputation as a leading producer of theatrical work for children, teenagers and families. For more than 16 years, Windmill has entertained more than 770,000 young people, presenting 63 works, including 36 new commissioned works, and 59 regional, national and international tours, taking in 247 cities across 28 countries and five continents in this time. In 2017, Windmill announced the launch of Windmill Pictures, a new arm of the company dedicated to developing screen projects from its live theatre repertoire.

Beep is part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Winter Spring Families season which sits within the highly respected year-round Families Program. Featuring intimate and large-scale theatre from some of the world’s most respected companies and a diverse range of interactive workshops, the program is robust and growing in size, scale and scope.

“Forget Star Wars’ BB-8 or Pixar’s WALL-E, Beep is the most endearing robot of them all.” The Adelaide Review
