American Truck Simulator Iowa DLC Review (PC)

Behold, the Hawkeye State, where current prices on corn, soybeans and pork are staples of every morning radio broadcast. Having lived there for a year, it stands as one of the most beautiful places I’ve encountered in the United States, thus eager to try out the latest and greatest DLC from SCS’ American Truck Simulator.

Well, there it is in all its glory! The beautiful capital city of Des Moines, I-35 connecting Iowa to the most recent DLC in Missouri, and the Quad Cities just calling out on the Eastern end of the State.

If you know Iowa, you certainly are familiar with I-80, connector to everything. Also, the gorgeous drive along the arguable heart of the US waterway in the Mississippi River. Finally – and you’re looking closely – you’ll drive through Waterloo (no, not THAT one, Abba!) and Dyersville (of Field of Dreams fame). Was hoping for some Story County love, but it wasn’t meant to be (don’t hate us Ames…go Cyclones!).

Arguably the coolest part of this DLC is Iowa authenticity. Deliveries are Midwest US real, in ethanol, aluminum, and an array of agricultural products as jobs du jour. In the seeming chase for the greatest truck depot ever, the Iowa DLC arguably features best in breed to date for American Truck Simulator en route to Des Moines. The one truck stop to rule them all in size and scale! SCS also launched the Iowa DLC along with new farm machinery and themed special transport to round out the experience.

As an actual driver on Iowa’s roads, I’m pleased to report they are nice and wide here to include turning lane radius. Admittedly some other DLC frustrated in lanes too narrow to navigate and left turns requiring feats of magic to avoid damaging your truck.

What does return, however, is the occasionally broken closed interstate connector in both directions. This results in an infinite loop in both directions as the provided GPS doesn’t update to yield an alternate route. Not asking for a dramatic overhaul, but closing a key interstate in both directions…while on a limited gas tank…and no adjusted GPS = big rig Tartarus.

Moreover, please note this is not one of American Truck Simulator’s biggest (in available jobs) or most diverse offerings. Iowa is a farm state first and foremost, and the scenery – while lush and authentic – is not as varied in comparison to other DLC. This is probably a must purchase for those – like myself – familiar with Iowa or individuals wanting to connect the Midwest corridor for biggest payout jobs. Otherwise, there may be better value in job numbers and scenery elsewhere. Still, the Midwest US is the trucking capital of the Continent. Closing the loop with Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri is a wonderful combo with oodles of big jobs and opportunity.

Full confession: I’m chomping at the bit for the next DLC that is the Pelican State of Louisiana. Can’t wait to navigate the bayou routes of I10 to/from Baton Rouge, New Orleans and out West to Lafayette. This is my favorite State in the US and one I spent so many beloved years on its roads. Can’t wait!
