Steve Niles Interview on Heartbreak Manor!

Heartbreak Manor isn’t your typical holiday tale — it’s a beautifully crafted descent into dread, where elegance and unease walk hand in hand. With Steve Niles and Damien Worm reuniting at the height of their creative powers, this chilling ghost story blends classic atmosphere with modern bite, delivering a festive nightmare readers won’t soon forget.

Heartbreak Manor has been described as the most disturbing Holiday special imaginable, yet visually stunning. What first sparked the idea, and how did you balance beauty with horror in its tone and presentation?

Steve: Not sure if it’s the most disturbing, but it’s a good one! I’m a big fan of ghost stories such as The Orphanage, The Sixth Sense, The Others, as well as stories by M.R. James… so I wanted to create an old‑fashioned ghost story — something that really gets under your skin. I think the era lends itself to a beautiful and refined look of horror that only Damien can create. He’s great at period horror.

You and Damien Worm have a long‑standing creative chemistry. What made him the perfect partner for Heartbreak Manor, and how did your collaboration evolve during its development?

Steve: Damien is just brilliant. He’s easy to work with, and he’s such an innovative artist — perfect for horror. He’s been great at drawing the pages knowing we would crowdfund with Zoop, so he’s really involved in making this a success.

The artwork in Heartbreak Manor is being praised as gorgeous despite the unsettling subject matter. How did you and Damien approach the visual language to ensure it remained haunting without losing its elegance?

Steve: You nailed it with “haunting” and “elegant.” Our partnership has just come naturally to Damien and me. Both of us find macabre imagery beautiful, so I think we try to show that in all of our projects. Damien is just a natural for this kind of art. It’s amazing.

Holiday stories usually lean warm and nostalgic. Heartbreak Manor leans chilling and subversive. What themes were most important for you to explore, and what emotional response do you hope readers walk away with?

Steve: Christmas is supposed to be a time for family and celebration. But in Heartbreak Manor, it might mean the arrival of something much more sinister. I think readers will root for Sally.

The upcoming Zoop campaign for Heartbreak Manor already has fans buzzing. What can supporters expect in terms of exclusive content, tiers, behind‑the‑scenes material, or stretch goals?

Steve: Damien, living in Spain, isn’t on hand to sign books very often. So one of the biggest things is that he’ll be able to sign for those who want his signature, as well as doing Remarque versions. That’s a big deal. And my wife Monica, who is very well known in underground and goth music, will be creating a soundtrack for the book along with her partner Anthony Roumanis, so I’m really excited about that.

You’ve built an incredible career across multiple genres and mediums. How has your creative philosophy evolved over the years, and how does Heartbreak Manor reflect where you are as a storyteller today?

Steve: Well, thanks for that. You know, I’ve begun writing screenplays and prose versions before actually scripting a comic. I wrote a screenplay for Heartbreak Manor, which has helped the story itself so much.

Looking back at your past work — whether your early comics, collaborations, or genre‑bending projects — what elements or lessons from those experiences found their way into Heartbreak Manor?

Steve: I’ve learned to trust the artist — especially if it’s Damien!
