Valve Announces New Steam Controller, Launching May 4
Valve has officially unveiled the next-generation Steam Controller, with a global launch set for May 4th, 2026 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Designed to work seamlessly across the entire Steam ecosystem — including PC, laptop, Steam Deck, Steam Link devices, and Valve’s upcoming Steam Machine and Steam Frame — the new controller marks Valve’s return to dedicated gaming hardware.
The company positions this model as a fully featured, high‑performance input device built for modern PC gaming, whether you prefer traditional controls, gyro aiming, trackpad precision, or a hybrid of all three.
A New Design Built for Flexibility
Valve’s updated Steam Controller introduces several hardware improvements aimed at precision, comfort and adaptability:
- Next‑generation magnetic thumbsticks with TMR technology for improved accuracy and long‑term durability
- Full‑sized controls for a more traditional gamepad feel
- Dual trackpads, continuing Valve’s signature approach to mouse‑like precision
- Grip buttons, expanding input options without compromising ergonomics
- Grip‑enabled Gyro (Grip Sense), allowing players to activate gyro aiming simply by holding the controller naturally
The controller is designed to support everything from fast‑paced shooters to strategy titles, sim games and indie releases — essentially anything in your Steam library.
The Return of the Puck
One of the more playful additions is the included wireless puck, which serves two purposes:
- A low‑latency wireless transmitter for a stable, responsive connection
- A magnetic charging dock that snaps into place when the controller needs power
Valve claims the controller can deliver 35+ hours of gameplay on a full charge, depending on usage.
Global Availability
The Steam Controller will be available directly through Steam in the U.S., Canada, U.K., EU and Australia, with additional distribution in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan via Komodo Station.

Valve has confirmed the following regional pricing (VAT included where applicable):
- US: $99 USD
