The ZX Spectrum that never was, until now – The Spectrum White Edition, launches today

Retro Games Ltd (RGL) announces that The Spectrum White Editionis available now, marking exactly 44 years to the day since the original rubber-keyed ZX Spectrum 48k first launched on 23rd April 1982.  Developed in collaboration with PLAION REPLAIThe Spectrum White Edition reimagines one of gaming’s most iconic and influential home computers through a striking new all-white design inspired by decades of community folklore.

For years, stories have circulated of a white ZX Spectrum created to mark the milestone of one million units sold.  While never commercially released, it became a symbol of possibility within the retro gaming community.  Today, that story becomes reality.

The Spectrum White Edition is a collector’s celebration of a machine that helped define an era, a device that introduced millions to gaming, sparked the rise of bedroom coders, and shaped the foundations of the modern video games industry.

This new edition delivers the same authentic experience as the original release of The Spectrum, combining faithful design with modern convenience.  Key features include:

  • Full-size recreation of the ZX Spectrum 48k with iconic rubber keyboard
  • 48 built-in games, including genre-defining classics
  • HDMI output with multiple display modes
  • USB support for controllers and custom content
  • Compatibility with both 48k and 128k models

The White Edition also introduces two exclusive accessories included in the box:

  • A matching white microswitch joystick
  • A custom THEMICRODRIVE USB stick

Together, they create a complete out-of-the-box experience designed for both play and display.

Launching alongside The Spectrum White Edition isTHEGAMEPAD (White),a separately available controller designed to complement the new colourway and extend the play experience.  Styled to match the clean, all-white aesthetic of the system, THEGAMEPAD (White) offers players an alternative control option for supported titles, combining modern ergonomics with the same attention to design fidelity that defines Retro Games Ltd hardware.  Whether used as a primary controller or as part of a multi-player setup, THEGAMEPAD (White) enhances accessibility while maintaining the visual identity of the White Edition.

More than four decades after its original release, the ZX Spectrum remains one of the most beloved and culturally significant home computers ever made.  Launching on the anniversary of the original machine reinforces the enduring impact of the Spectrum by connecting past and present in a single moment, while inviting a new generation to experience its legacy.

Paul Andrews, Managing Director at Retro Games Ltd, said, “Releasing The Spectrum White Edition on the anniversary of the original ZX Spectrum feels incredibly special for us.  That machine changed everything for so many people, not just as players, but as creators.  The White Edition celebrates that legacy while giving fans a new way to experience it today, whether they’re playing, collecting, or simply reconnecting with something that meant a lot to them.”

The Spectrum White Edition is out today, priced at $269.95, with THEGAMEPAD (White) being available separately for $44.95.  Both can be purchased at The Gamesmen.
