Numbskulls Star Trek Enterprise NCC 1701-D Plaque gives a great first impression. The padded presentation box it comes in looks lovely and feels good in your hands as you slowly prize the lid off to unveil the plaque containing the replica of the Federation’s famous flagship inside.

After peeling the protective plastic off the acrylic frame and setting it down on my coffee table, it makes for an attractive, if somewhat imposing, ornament. At 38cm wide and 17.5cm long, it’s the kind of thing that stands out on a desk and looks lovely mounted on the wall. Or I’m sure it would if it came with the necessary mounting screws – Something that seems like a massive oversight for what is otherwise a premium product.

The plaque is well constructed, and the plastic replica Class-D sunk into the plaque looks the part. As a casual Trek fan, it’s certainly something I wouldn’t mind hanging in my office by my desk, which is most likely where it’ll end up after I’ve finished taking the snaps for this review.

However, when I handed it over to my Trekkie girlfriend, she started to count the windows and wondered where the lower decks had gone.

She also made sure all of the stats about the ship on the data card, which were cleverly stuck on the underside of the acrylic to ensure they couldn’t be rubbed off during cleaning, were accurate, though she wasn’t sure about the top speed. Though after much googling, she confirmed the NCC-1701-D was capable of hitting warp 9.9 after an upgrade. But had hit speeds that were off the chart in “Where No One Has Gone Before”.

It wasn’t exactly the kind of discussion I was expecting to have about a decorative plaque that your average nerd hangs from a wall in their office. Still, it’s good to know it’s accurate to the show, and it’s the kind of attention to detail you would expect for the price.

Personally, I think it’s a nice gift for a casual Next-Gen fan. I’m just saying, be prepared for some feverish googling if you’re gifting it to anyone who has a Starfleet uniform hung up on their wardrobe.

My one minor gripe about the plague is that the transfers on the saucer of the ship I received were a little crowded.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Numbskull’s Star Trek Enterprise NCC 1701-D Plaque is a well-made object constructed with high-grade materials, though the finish on the ship itself could have been a little better. It’s not something you’ll notice unless you’re meticulously going over every inch of it. Though I doubt most Trekkies who want something cool to put on their walls or shelf and appreciate while sipping on an Earl Grey (hot) are likely to do.

Although I think it should have come with some screws or maybe even magnets to help mount the plaque, it’s only a minor gripe about what is otherwise a great piece of officially licensed memorabilia for those who wish to boldly go where no one has gone before.
