Much like vinyl is making a comeback, full over-ear headphones are having a moment of their own. While you watch joggers pant past with their bone-conduction headsets, you can relax on a bench with your wired Kiwi Ears Ellipse, providing you with quality audio all while enjoying the vegan leather comfort of the headband and earpads.

For those who want a quick look at the specs, the headset features:

  • Powered by a 50mm dynamic driver with custom-made PU and PEK composite diaphragms, which are enhanced by an ultra-pure copper ring.
  • The driver’s performance is further optimized with a custom CCAW High-Tension voice coil and strong N42 High-Performance magnets, ensuring rich, clear, and detailed sound across all frequencies.
  • The Ellipse’s driver and acoustics are finely tuned for a balanced, natural sound, delivering impactful lows, rich low-mids, and clear trebles for an immersive, speaker-like listening experience.
  • The Ellipse’s open-back design creates a wider soundstage, deeper lows, and more airy trebles, offering a lifelike, stereo speaker-like listening experience.

That’s what the website says… but how do they perform? Well, first of all, the earcups are a good size; they actually fit my ears, which is saying something (I guess my ears are big?). The vegan leather is lovely and soft. I’m not sure how it will go long-term, as I am unsure of the durability of it, but out of the box, it is a lovely soft fit.

The audio out of the box is as intended: a much more natural sound. This means if you are used to all your speakers and earphones starting with a bass boost, you might feel the audio is a bit odd, but after a moment of really listening, you will find that it is indeed a much more neutral sound. For those who want it, you can use your setup to adjust bass and treble as you like, but at least you are starting from a more accurate baseline.

The thing that I think really makes this headset stand out is the connections. Firstly, you get a 3.5mm cable that has a 6.3mm adapter that can screw on the end so you can plug it into your high-end audio equipment (or presumably DJ equipment). Even more interesting is that each ear is connected separately. Now you might be thinking, “duh, there’s a cable for each ear on all earphones,” but in this case, you can connect each ear separately as they have their own 3.5mm jack. I’m assuming this is to fit in line with the DJ aspect and would theoretically allow someone to have the currently running track playing in one ear and would then be able to use the other ear, connected to another source, to get their next track set up and be able to listen to the two simultaneously to get perfect transitions, etc. It’s quite an interesting idea, and I don’t think I’ve ever come across it before.

Final Thoughts:

A good-quality headset with a lovely, natural sound out of the box and a range of connection options to cover different use cases from professional to home listening. The earcups that fit “larger” ears with comfort certainly makes this a headset to seriously consider.

Moving on to the more traditional PC genre in the years that followed with the classic Jump Joe and Alley Cat. CGA, EGA, VGA and beyond PC's have been central to my gaming but I've also enjoyed consoles and hand helds along the way (who remembers the Atari Lynx?).
