MICF 2023: Tripod Review

Summary: You pretty know what to expect by now. If they don't play the specific song you wanted just buy the Schitck of Tripod after the show and it has all of them on it.

Now I am the master!

The venerable Tripod return for their 2023 festival show. They have progress past needing an actual theme for their shows. Unfortunately last year’s show was interrupted by COVID and they had to cancel pretty much the whole run. Someone I know got the same off Rob Hirst while touring with Midnight Oil so there was a lot of it around.

I had seen the group at their Christmas show which they had reschedule due to not enough interest for October and November shows as it was meant to be a once a month residency at that venue.

This show does not have the specific Christmas songs that are in that show but there are a lot of songs that are the same. They have so many songs after being around for so long, I remember seeing them in 2000 and they had already been going for a few years by then.

I had to rush to make it to this show and just got there when they had started but did not miss much. As it is just them singing and not a set performance this time there is not a narrative structure you have to worry about having to catch up on.

Some nice updated references in the songs and seems to be some new ones where they make fun of Yon having the only new skill he pictured up in the pandemic was playing VR. They have known each other for so long you can tell it is well-natured and not mean spirited when they do these songs.

I often see Scott around town and he waves. I used to see Tripod a lot when the ASRC benefits were a thing and that would be one of the only events I would go to at the comedy festival due to not working at the time for several years. Scott also plays in a Billy Joel cover band with Casey Bennetto which packed out the Brunswick Ballroom last time I saw it.

Last time I saw them I got the “Schtick of Tripod” with pretty much all their songs on it so I did not care as much they didn’t do one particular song I wanted. They know which ones work by now have managed to arrange them into various arcs that fit this particular show. I did get to see them do their sound check and take photos a couple of years back and they did the run-through in a lot shorter time than I thought they would.

If you see one veteran act from the comedy festival I recommend it would be this one. Makes a good staging point to go to other shows later in the evening and hopefully if it is not raining you can walk back to the city.
