Your chance to perform in THOSE WHO ROCK at Arts Centre Melbourne in 2019

Arts Centre Melbourne is inviting music-lovers to rock out at Hamer Hall as part of a massive, free community concert featuring Aussie music icons in March 2019. Those Who Rock, a participatory arts project led by internationally-acclaimed artist Joseph Farrell (JOF), invites members of the community of all skill levels and ages to grab a guitar and join free community rehearsals across Melbourne in February. The project will culminate in a huge concert featuring hundreds of guitarists and some of Australia’s beloved rock heroes at Arts Centre Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on March 24, 2019.

Rock dogs and guitar-playing newbies alike are invited to join JOF and his team to rehearse a set list of iconic rock anthems at rehearsals in Fitzroy, Frankston, Werribee, Dandenong, Sunshine and Broadmeadows in January 2019. All are welcome to participate, including those who have never played a guitar before.

Each group will have their moment in the spotlight as they band together to perform a song learnt through the rehearsal process. The songs include “You’re the Voice” by John Farnham (Broadmeadows),  “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again” by The Angels (Frankston)  “Enter Sandman” by Metallica, (Sunshine),  “Horses” by Daryl Braithwaite (Dandenong),  “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts (Fitzroy) and “We Will Rock You” by Queen (Werribee). In the epic finale, all guitarists will join forces on stage to perform ACDC’s rock anthem, “For Those About To Rock”.

“It will be great to see a whole host of people take the Hamer Hall stage for the first time and promote diversity in music. Get involved!’’ says JOF.

Participants will need to bring their own guitars but everything else will be provided to make the performance a great success. To participate contact the Those Who Rock team atinfo@thosewhorock.com

The project is presented by Arts Centre Melbourne as part of its Betty Amsden Participation Program, an annual community event series established by the late Betty Amsden AO and Arts Centre Melbourne to explore and encourage cultural democracy. The large-scale, interactive and free projects are designed to inspire and engage the city of Melbourne.

Joseph O’Farrell (JOF) is an internationally renowned artist who creates large-scale installation and theatre works with, and for, communities in celebration of diversity and bringing people together in hilarious and unlikely situations. He is a founding member of The Suitcase Royale, a trio that has been touring new Australian theatre works nationally and internationally since 2004. His work has toured across Australia and the UK, including the TATE Modern (UK), Southbank Centre (UK), Anti-Festival (Finland), Nelson, Kokoma and Tauranga Festivals (NZ), Sydney Festival, and City of Darebin. Those Who Rock builds on the success of other community projects led by JOF, including We Are Lightning! (Arts House, UK touring) and Enter Sandman (City of Darebin, Regional Centre of Culture).

HISTORY OF THE BETTY AMSDEN PARTICIPATION PROGRAM

In 2014, the streets of Melbourne were filled with music as 24 pianos beautifully decorated by community groups graced the streets of Melbourne for three weeks over summer for anyone to play and enjoy in Play Me, I’m Yours.

In 2015, 7000 little wooden houses, all individually decorated by people from across Victoria to represent our feelings of home, filled our streets, parks, favourite city spots and social media for Home.

In 2016, in an Australian first the Dominoes project saw a 2 km chain of more than 7000 breezeblocks snaking through the city to bring Melbourne to a stand-still for one day.

In 2017, Fun Run saw artist Tristan Meecham run a gruelling 42 kilometres on a treadmill at Arts Centre Melbourne supported by massive visual effects, a sizzling soundtrack, a silky-voiced MC and hundreds of performers and athletes drawn from the local community.

In 2018 Play Me I’m Yours returned when 21 pianos beautifully decorated by community groups graced the streets of Melbourne for anyone to play and enjoy.
