A Year With Minecraft: Behind the Scenes at Mojang
Author:
Thomas Arnoroth
Publisher: New South Books
Pages: 216
Price: $22.95

This interesting book has been written by Swedish journalist Thomas Arnoroth who takes the viewer to the wondrous world of Minecraft and more particularly, behind the scenes of this world wide gaming sensation. Arnoroth also had the opportunity to actually spend time at the Mojang offices which also adds to his credibility of this amazing story.

A Year With Minecraft: Behind the Scenes at Mojang focuses on the creators of Minecraft, Jens Bergensten and Markus Persson who started from normality and ended up as gaming gurus who also happened to make quite a lot of money along the way. I enjoyed how Arnoroth followed the creators and although the book is slightly focused on Persson, the other members of Mojang are also touched upon during this insightful look into one of the world’s most popular indie titles.

The novel even explores the Microsoft release of Minecraft which was on the Xbox 360 and helped cement the popularity of this game. With that said, the rise of Minecraft did have its casualties but this book does not touch upon these. One fascinating part that I found interesting was how the mythical “game” 0x10c evolved which ultimately failed.

The book even touches outside the gaming sphere such as how this game is used as a teaching tool and it is even used by the United Nations for social planning. Given that, A Year With Minecraft: Behind the Scenes at Mojang is a very interesting and at times thought provoking read, especially about the trials and tribulations of this extraordianry game.

Final Thoughts?

If you enjoyed Indie Game: The Movie, than you’ll definitely enjoy A Year With Minecraft: Behind the Scenes at Mojang as it goes behind the scenes of both the indie and mainstream gaming industry.
