Affordably tracking

If you’re after an affordable tracker, it’s hard to look past the Xiaomi Tag (*) which offers secure tracking through the Apple and Google (reviewed) ecosystems. At its core, it’s been designed to help locate personal belongings (e.g. luggage, keys) and provide real-time location tracking via its smartphone app.

Best of all, the Xiaomi Tag is affordably priced at $29.50 AUD (April 2026) through Xiaomi Australia and it weighs just 10 grams (about the weight of two $2 Australian coins). It has an IP67 rating that completely protects it from dust and can withstand temporary immersion in water up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. Add a 1‑year battery life, which uses a replaceable CR2032 button battery, and it’s hard to look past this tracker.

Unboxing

The Xiaomi Tag is very small and measures 46.5 × 31 × 7.2 mm, and as mentioned, weighs just 10 grams. It also comes with an integrated lanyard loop that allows you to attach it to keys or even lanyards.

To use it, you just need either the Apple Find My app (iOS) or the Google Find My Device app (Android), then follow the setup process which is a breeze. Most new Apple and Android phones will automatically start the process for you.

So how does the Xiaomi Tag work? The Tag utilises Bluetooth 5.4 technology to provide consistent location updates and anonymously connect to nearby smartphones to send its location to the cloud, which then allows you to see it on a map via your Xiaomi app.

As this tag does not use Ultra‑Wideband (UWB), it does have some limitations when it comes to accuracy, however Bluetooth 5.4 has a higher range when connecting to a smartphone, reaching up to 100 metres, whereas UWB is up to 30 metres.

Also, the device includes anti‑tracking alerts (mentioned in the setup) which prevent unauthorised tracking by sending notifications if someone stashes the tag in your bag or even in your car. This helps stop stalking and unwanted tracking of people.

To access the tag on an Android phone, you just load the Google Hub, scroll down to Xiaomi Tag and it will inform you when it was last seen, allow you to see it on a map and play a sound to help track it. Further, you can mark it as lost, share the item location, share ownership and get directions to find it. Very simple.

Final Thoughts?

If you’re looking for an affordable tracker that is half the price of the Apple AirTag, the Xiaomi Tag hits the right price point and works on both Android and iOS devices. Setup is easy and tracking is as well.
