X-Men of Apocalypse #1 REVIEW
Bittersweet Reunion
The X-Men of the Age of Apocalypse timeline arrive at the Age of Xavier. Seeking to confront their belief that their timeline is the correct timeline, the 616 main timeline is in jeopardy. Their goal: find Xavier and extract from him information that may destroy the main timeline and leave the Age of Apocalypse timeline intact. In X-Men of Apocalypse #1, the Age of Apocalypse team comes face to face with the world’s most powerful mutant. His name is Nate Gray. Not only do the X-Men attack him, but Forge also attempts to reconnect with Nate to find out if he’s from the same universe. What happens next might shock some readers.
Following the events of X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha, the X-Men of that timeline have arrived at the main timeline seeking to erase the current one they believe is incorrect. With a strong conviction, Jeph Loeb (Civil War) composes characters that will achieve their goals no matter what they must do to obtain them. The X-Men of the Apocalypse timeline are unsure who they would encounter as they made their move, but Nate, being the first person they encounter, is a perfect shift in direction. As Nate comes from the world that he thought he lost, it made sense for Loeb to include him in this wild adventure. What came as a surprise was the sudden brawl between these X-Men and the Uncanny X-Men in this story. The exchange of realizations that the people they know are not the same people they are fighting, and questions by almost every mutant, is fascinating to explore, thanks to Loeb. X-Men of Apocalypse #1 continues to spark interest as to how this might turn out due to it being a time-traveling mission, which focuses on correcting the past. The question remains if these X-Men will achieve their goal or will someone or something will betray them in the end.
Incredibly illustrated, Simone Di Meo’s (Green Lantern) work on the interior of X-Men of Apocalypse #1 is second to none. The in-your-face action is unreal to experience. The way Simone draws X-Men characters is entertaining and grasps the idea of what a comic book is supposed to feel like when reading it. Additionally, the color work mixed in with the ink vividly expresses the ambience of the comic book. Simone’s line work is clean and smooth with a refined attention to detail. The kind of interior artwork Simone creates for this story is not currently present on the shelves of other comic books. Not to exclude any artists in the business, but Simone’s style of art cannot be compared to anyone else, as it is unique and one of a kind.
Speaking of one of a kind, Richard Starkings (Batman / Superman: World’s Finest) and ComiCraft (21 Down) are fantastically nailing the flow and control of the lettering for X-Men of Apocalypse #1. Amazingly, both Starkings and ComiCraft enhance the comic book with the outstanding quality of lettering placement, narration, and sound effects.
The cover artwork for the comic book by Simone Di Meo is riveting. It’s packed with heart-pounding action, extravagant colors, and intrigue.
Overall, X-Men of Apocalypse #1 is a joy to read. The writing, art, and lettering all complement each other to visually create an X-Men book that separates itself from either past or present books to talk about. Fans of the Apocalypse X-Men and current X-Men won’t be disappointed with this comic book. Be sure to pick this one up and your local comic book store or where copies are sold online. Nothing beats a good mystery when it comes to the lives of X-Men across any timeline.
