Armageddon Expo 2012!

It’s that time of year again, sci-fi fans of all disciplines and all allegiances descend on Jeff’s Shed to meet their hero’s, buy overpriced merchandise and for some reason watch wrestling.

The great thing about Armageddon is that the guests are getting better and better every year, this year they had: Karl Urban, Bruce Boxlightner, Terry Molloy, Christopher Heyerdhal, Christopher Judge and many, many more and it was such a good line-up that it seemed to make very little difference that it’s almost a completely different lineup to the one that was announced, but that is the way of conventions.

In the UK it used to be worse, at least someone took the time to replace the people that couldn’t come (it was almost a B5 reunion) with people that were at least as interesting. In the old days you would settle go to a Doctor Who convention and you were lucky if Nicholas Briggs and a star of Coronation Street turned up, and this was before Nick Briggs was the voice of the Daleks.

There are other convention traditions that were honored.

  • Costumes, which are also getting better year after year. Although there was a lamentable lack of cross genre Darth Vader’s this year.
  • Extremely pretty women wearing costumes that were really only designed to go on characters that were drawn were out in force this year in fact the number of extremely pretty women goes up every year too. I blame David Tennant with a side proportion of blame going to Matt Smith.
  • People who are extremely famous being incredibly generous with their time and generally being really nice. Examples of this that I witnessed included Bruce Boxlightner, Christopher Judge and Mark Pellegrino.

Other points of interest included the Aston Martin DBS from On her Majesties Secret Service. Which is a “bite the back of your hand” beautiful car.

A whole heap of Daleks , photo opportunities with some very big names, a group of Mandalorians and a 3D printer demonstration that was fairly impressive.

It is nice to have a world class con in Australia and I can only see it getting bigger and better from here. Roll on Armageddon 2013!
