WHITE NIGHT MELBOURNE: MUSIC PROGRAM ANNOUNCED
On Saturday 20 February 2016, across four music stages and throughout the city, the music program for White Night Melbourne 2016 will deliver the equivalent of 100 hours of live entertainment from more than 220 performers.
The four music stages; Trip the Light Fantastic, Grooves on Bourke, Live on Lonsdale and The Blues Speakeasy Stage as well as classical performances in St Paul’s Cathedral: Silver Rain: Illuminated Opera, Luminesce and Classical Revolution; will showcase a variety of music genres including jazz, blues, funk, R+B, soul, world music, pop, hip-hop, dance, electronic, classical, country, instrumental and rock.

Artistic Director Andrew Walsh AM said, “While this year’s program is distinctly local, the musical influences span the globe from Africa, South America, India, New Orleans, New York and our own traditional and contemporary Indigenous musicians.
“Iconic Australian musician Robert Forster, soulful Indigenous artist Emma Donovan and the Putbacks and hard hitting hip-hop act Briggs are just a few of the ‘must-see acts’ that come to mind in what is an incredibly strong and diverse roster of musicians.”

Trip the Light Fantastic, Birrarung Marr
Dance the night away at Birrarung Marr with Trip the Light Fantastic, a massive open-air dance floor that will light up the night. Grab your partner and put on your dancing shoes for 12 hours of dance mania as Melbourne’s movers and shakers boogie and jive their way through a veritable smorgasbord of dance tunes from around the globe.
Grooves on Bourke, Bourke Street Mall
Chill with the cool kids at Grooves on Bourke. Hip, swingin’ jazz cats and those who dig the soul and funk, will descend onto Bourke Street Mall where live music will play for 12 hours, featuring hot, swinging jazz, New Orleans street party vibes, Hammond fuelled grooves, soulful vocals and mind blowing improvisation.
Live on Lonsdale, Lonsdale Street
Go loud and proud at Live on Lonsdale with a stellar line up of Melbourne musos spanning pop to rock and everything in between.
The Blues Speakeasy Stage, Alexandra Gardens
Swing on by White Night’s very own ‘speakeasy’. Musicians from Melbourne’s thriving blues scene come together for a night of rocking grooves and down-home blues. Recreating the ‘speakeasy’ atmosphere of the 1930s and 40s, this night of swinging tunes, primitive boogie and bluesy riffs will have the crowd on their feet for a little Mississippi mayhem – Melbourne style!
Silver Rain: Illuminated Opera, St Paul’s Cathedral
A captivating concoction of visuals and voices. Award-winning sisters and rising opera sensations Kirilie and Ruth Blythman join forces with talented Melbourne projection artist Michael Carmody to create a truly immersive and evocative performance. Using the poetic music of Ricky Ian Gordon as a canvas, Silver Rain explores themes of nature, fantasy, creativity and time, found in the words of famous American poets including Langston Hughes, Dorothy Parker and Emily Dickinson.
Luminesce, St Paul’s Cathedral
A groundbreaking collaboration among vocal ensemble Invenio, video artist Robert Jarvis and composer Gian Slater, Luminesce melds voice, movement and projection to create a luminescent musical landscape. Winner in the ‘live’ category of the 2015 International Visual Music Award, Luminesce explores a pattern-oriented musical landscape derived from a visual perspective. Within the parameters of symmetry, form and velocity, the compositions create a new system and performative environment for this vocal ensemble.
Classical Revolution, St Paul’s Cathedral
Discover a classical oasis in the heart of White Night. Curated to complement the ebb and flow of the night as it evolves through the hours, be transported by performances from Australia’s most exciting and vibrant young classical musicians.

White Night Melbourne, Australia’s only all night celebration of culture and creativity and a genuine urban adventure returns for the fourth year for one night only on Saturday 20 February 2016 from 7pm to 7am, featuring local, national and international artists and works.
White Night Melbourne is the city as you know it, turned on its head in a dusk ‘til dawn celebration. A night where the surreal seems real, White Night Melbourne is a rare opportunity to experience the city in a different light.
The event makes the impossible possible through installation, lighting, exhibitions, street performances, film, music, dance and interactive events taking place in the streets and laneways, parklands, public spaces and cultural institutions of Melbourne.
