Andrew Neyman (Teller) is an ambitious young jazz drummer, single-minded in his pursuit to rise to the top of his elite cut throat music conservatory. Plagued by the failed writing career of his father (Paul Reiser, Funny People, The Aristocrats), Andrew is determined to add his name to the short list of widely known jazz greats. Andrew’s life changes forever when he’s discovered by instructor Terence Fletcher (Simmons), who transfers the aspiring drummer into the school’s top jazz ensemble.
Equally known for his teaching talents as for his terrifying methods, Fletcher begins to mentor Andrew and will stop at nothing to get him to the top. Andrew’s passion to achieve perfection quickly spirals into obsession, as the ruthless Fletcher pushes him to the brink of his ability and his sanity. As Andrew begins cutting out relationships from his life, will his fixation for perfection get in the way of his dreams?
