4.4

Power-up

The WD Black SN7100 NVMe SSD is Western Digital’s latest drive in high-speed storage and is the successor to the SN770 that makes the new drive an ideal choice for gamers, PC “do-it-yourself” enthusiasts and everyday users on a budget who are searching for that performance upgrade to level-up their systems. Pricing in Australia is competitive, with the 1TB version available for approximately AUD $140, making it a decent option for users looking to upgrade without stretching their budget too far.

WD Black SN7100 2 TB SSD Specifications

This SSD is powered by Western Digital’s proprietary controller and uses 218-layer BiCS8 TLC NAND flash, ensuring durability and consistent functionality. It adopts a DRAM-less configuration, relying on host memory buffer (HMB) technology to optimise performance while keeping costs down. This approach enables quick access times, particularly beneficial for gaming and multitasking.

Storage capacity options include 500GB, 1TB (reviewed) and 2TB, though those needing larger amounts will be disappointed by the absence of a 4TB variant. Designed with a single-sided form factor, it fits well in laptops, gaming consoles (e.g. PlayStation 5) and compact PC setups, offering broad compatibility… and desktops of course!

For software, the drive comes with the Western Digital WD_Black Dashboard that allows you to monitor your drive, check for firmware and tweak its performance. As a customer, you also have access to Acronis True Image that helps transfer information from existing drives to your new drive… and the physical drive comes with a 5-year limited warranty.

Given its cooling technology, its thermal management ensures stable speeds with lower power consumption. According to Western Digital, the WD Black SN7100 NVMe SSD boasts speeds, with up to 7,250MB/s for sequential reads and 6,900MB/s for sequential writes (for 1-2TB models). It also delivers up to 1,000K random read IOPS and 1,400K random write IOPS which doesn’t make it a slouch.

Here are some of the benchmark scores for the WD Black SN7100 NVMe SSD below.

CrystalDiskMark8

  • Sequential Read (Q=8, T=1) 7201
  • Sequential Write (Q=8, T=1) 6901

3DMark

  • Storage Benchmark 4051

PCMark

  • Storage Benchmark 4901

PlayStation 5 Pro

  • SSD Read Test 6538

Translation? Although this drive is not the fastest kid on the block, it does provide a midrange NVMe with more than acceptable read/write times, including overall tests that will suit a large cohort of PC users or those looking for a second drive. However if you’re a PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 5 Pro owner, it’s a great upgrade option to add more storage to your next-gen console.

Final Thoughts?

Western Digital’s WD Black SN7100 NVMe SSD presents a reliable storage solution with an emphasis on efficiency and all-round consistent performance. While it may not lead the pack in raw speed, it compensates with impressive power management and midrange speeds. Whether for gaming, professional tasks or general computing, this drive delivers solid performance without excessive cost, making it a practical investment for a variety of users.
