4K smarts!
The TP-Link Tapo C660 Kit is a complete outdoor security package that combines a 4K pan/tilt camera with a dedicated solar panel. It delivers high-definition monitoring and sustainable power in one streamlined solution that is affordably priced at just $229AUD and yes, you read correctly. Supporting its overall build quality is its weather resistant casing that is rated at IP66, ensuring durability against rain and dust for that extra level of protection.
Further, the solar panel keeps the rechargeable battery topped up for extended use, so you rarely need to think about charging, that is dependent on its positioning towards the sun. With solar support it becomes a set and forget system designed for continuous operation, however the heavy use of live view or continuous recording can drain the battery faster so full sun placement of the solar panel is a must. During our testing, the camera’s battery has remained at 100% daily which really makes this security device a true set and forgot cordless system.

Setup
Installation is a straightforward yet a thorough process thanks to the quick start guide and setup video via the QR code. You first begin by charging the camera via its USB-C port that can take up to 6.5 hours.
Next, install the Tapo app if not already installed, then follow the wizard that will connect it to your Wi-Fi (2.4GHz or 5GHz) and if you are using local storage, insert a microSD card (up to 512GB is supported). Tapo also provides accessories to help you mount it outside, including pictographs for best placement. The solar panel also comes with a long cable for attaching it directly onto the camera or positioning it elsewhere to maximise sunlight.
Once installed, the Tapo app becomes the control centre for the C660, which is not only intuitive to navigate but also packed with advanced features. These features include motion detection with customisable activity zones, AI powered recognition for people, pets and vehicles, two-way audio with clear microphone and speaker quality for real time communication, viewpoint presets and pan/tilt navigation. By default, the recording of voice is disabled as this may conflict with certain local council guidelines in Australia, however it can be enabled.
.
The live view via the app allows you to manually pan the camera up and down and a patrol mode can be activated to automatically scan your property. You can also set custom patrol presets, so the camera focuses on specific areas of interest, which is particularly useful for larger properties. In addition, the C660 supports AI auto‑tracking, automatically following moving subjects such as people or vehicles to keep them in frame.
The app also supports scheduled recording, smart alerts, integration with other Tapo devices, local microSD storage and optional cloud storage. TP-Link includes a 30-day free trial of Tapo Care cloud storage without requiring a credit card, allowing you to test cloud features before deciding if you need them. Paid Tapo Care tiers are also available, offering extended video history and rich notifications. For smart home users, the C660 integrates with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa (tested), allowing live streaming to compatible smart displays and voice control.
The video quality of the C660 Kit is excellent thanks to its 4K Ultra HD (8MP, 3840×2160) resolution, which captures fine detail with impressive clarity. It features colour night vision with a starlight sensor and built‑in spotlights, ensuring clear footage even in very dark conditions. Wide dynamic range (WDR) balances exposure in challenging lighting conditions such as bright sunlight and shadows. A 110° field of view combined with pan/tilt capability ensures wide coverage, providing 360° horizontal and 130° vertical coverage. The camera also includes a built‑in siren and light alarm, which can be triggered manually or automatically to deter intruders. Depending on your Wi-Fi connection, the live feed may introduce a slight delay when viewed in real time, however this does not affect recorded footage or playback quality.
Final Thoughts
The Tapo C660 Kit provides everything you need in a wireless smart security camera, from a sturdy weatherproof build thanks to its IP66 rating, effortless installation and a feature rich app with outstanding 4K video performance. Add in a patrol mode, custom presets, AI detection, auto‑tracking, deterrent siren, smart home integration plus two-way audio it really ensures comprehensive coverage of your property. Complementing this is the dual band Wi-Fi, WDR support and local storage options up to 512GB and when the rechargeable battery is paired with solar charging, it becomes a low maintenance solution for continuous outdoor monitoring that is affordably priced with no hidden costs.
