The Undead Iron Fist #2 REVIEW
New York Demon Brawl
Danny Rand is running on borrowed time. The constant spawning of Wraithlins grows ever more troublesome in The Undead Iron Fist #2 as Danny fights through hordes of them to change the fate of Iron Fists’ successors. Built upon a lie, Danny must comfort the one who created the Book of Iron Fist using his bestowed abilities from an entity not yet revealed. This commotion transpiring in New York catches the attention of Hell’s Kitchen protector, Daredevil, who knows this mysterious individual from the way he moves. Daredevil tries to intervene, but Danny has no time to waste on this ruin. His soul is disappearing with each technique he uses on the Wraithlins. Will he have enough left of his soul to confront the coming final battle?
Jumping back into the fray, Jason Loo (The Invincible Iron Man) continues to deliver an action-packed adventure with The Undead Iron Fist #2. The flow of the story feels like a battle royale. The only difference between that concept is that Danny Rand is the only contender in this constant struggle between good and evil. The interesting progression of this story is the sheer need to keep pressing forward, no matter what comes his way. This means he also cannot take any time to explain or at least conversate with old friends now. Readers will enjoy this aspect of the comic book because it shows how much importance time is to Danny and his newfound powers bestowed upon him. The fact that Danny uses his powers in this series every time it causes his soul to dwindle away is a factor that makes this comic book more entertaining. It’s a race against not only time, but also for the lives of those after him that bear the Iron Fist mantle.
Illustrated by Fran Galán (The Roadie), The Undead Iron Fist #2 is gifted with awesome art that is remarkably refreshing in a comic book like this. The movements of the characters in the panels felt naturally entertaining to experience. The backgrounds and environments moving from panel to panel were well fleshed out. The transitions felt like watching an action film. Not sure about how other readers might feel, but the artwork is perfect for a story like this involving Danny’s return to the living world. Galán’s touch on this comic book is a joy to read through.
Enhancing the overall quality of the comic book, Jim Campbell (Bill & Ted Go to Hell) contributed vividly to the coloring of this 24-page fantastic ride. The colors express not only clarity but a sense of emotion throughout the comic book.
The lettering by Travis Lanham (Aero & Sword Master) was a delight to be exposed to a flow of narration and substance of storytelling. The appreciation of Lanham’s craft is positioning dialogue, captions, and sound effects in appropriate places that do not obstruct the quality of the comic book.
The cover art to The Undead Iron Fist #2 by both Whilce Portacio (Batman Legends) and Alex Sinclair (All-New Venom) is another peculiar addition that captures a glimpse of what readers can expect to find out about the comic book inside. It raises questions but entices a reader as to why Daredevil is on the front cover with Danny in the first place. It’s safe to assume that both contributors wanted to make something that said this comic book is all action, and there is no time to slow down.
Overall, The Undead Iron Fist #2 is a riveting ride of martial arts action, demons, and non-stop brawling with a dash of humorous rebuttals. It’s a continuation of the Iron Fist legacy, so it’s best to pick this comic book up from your local comic book store or online, where copies are sold to stay in touch with this side of Marvel. Hopefully, Danny’s soul doesn’t disappoint readers in the future comic books to come in this series.
