The Undead Iron Fist #1 Review

The Immortal Iron Fist Returns from The Dead

Thought to be dead after celebrating his 34th birthday, Danny Rand—The Iron Fist, returns from the Underworld with a new mission and revelation. In The Undead Iron Fist #1, Danny is on borrowed time as his secret task is to rid the Ch’i-Lin of their existence. The creatures responsible for Danny’s murder are on a collision course straight back to the pits from where they came. As he carries out his mission, he is guided by a mysterious force that has granted him the powers to combat the Ch’i-Lin and dispel them from their human hosts. Meanwhile, a friendly neighborhood hero makes a guest appearance, and a former bearer of the mantle of Iron Fist appears.

Written by Jason Loo (Fantastic Four), Danny’s return from the grave gives readers a new perspective on what the legacy of the Iron Fist entails. As usual, the lore consists of former Iron Fist warriors dying around the age of 33, but with the return of Dann, there are a few questions raised in The Undead Iron Fist #1. As Loo may explain in later issues, why Danny can come back, the focus here is on Danny’s mission and his new powers. The reason to like this story is not only to welcome Danny back to the land of the living, but to understand that he’s on a journey without his signature powers. Instead, he’s given new ones that, if used unwisely, might cost him his ability to proceed forward. While the story takes place several months after his death, it helps the reader understand the spiritual willpower Danny has to cease to exist. Meanwhile, the story jumps back and forth between him in the Underworld and the real world as he deals with two obstacles simultaneously. Simultaneously, the addition of bringing in a web head to see what’s going on and for him to see what Danny sees opens a few doors in the later issues of the series to come.

Crafting the artwork to build a visual adventure, Fran Galán (Creepshow, Carnage), on The Undead Iron Fist #1, works perfectly. The linework is stunning. For a dead guy, Danny looks cool in his new attire for the comic book. Besides his looks, the environment Danny finds himself in is illustrated with compassion for the craft and execution of visual literature. The pages were crafted with style and poise.

Jim Campbell (Avengers, All-New X-Men) is a wonderful addition to the team as his coloring work embellishes the overall mood of the comic book. Just as Galán, Campbell brought the flavor of what action and adventure are supposed to feel like and observe.

The lettering by Travis Lanham (52, Age of Conan: Valeria) was a joy to experience in The Undead Iron Fist #1. The way Lanham designed the captions, word bubbles, and location of these important layouts allowed the story to flow smoothly without stopping. What’s entertaining about the use of Lanham’s captions is the placement when it comes to Danny naming the martial arts moves as he performs them. The comic book displays a distinct characteristic in how Danny uses his abilities and the lessons he’s learned up to now.

Concluding astoundingly, Whilce Portacio (Cable, Hellions) and Alex Sinclair (Action Comics, All-New Venom) illustrated an awesome cover for The Undead Iron Fist #1. It’s an Iron Fist the likes of which any fan has never seen before. The composition is an enticing image to view, and with the dragon looming behind Danny, it’s a solid cover to admire.

Overall, The Undead Iron Fist #1 is a comic book worth reading for Iron Fist fans to dive into. Even fans who are not familiar with Danny can also read this. If readers were concerned about Danny returning to the living world, then it’s best to pick this one up at your local comic book store or where copies are sold online.
