Switch Fighting!
With the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 last week, Capcom has come to the rescue of fans that love fighting games because Street Fighter 6 is a sturdy fighter that “thinks” outside the traditional fighting ring. Given the power of this new console, Street Fighter 6 looks very sharp on the Switch 2, with well-modelled and detailed characters, plus some impressive fighting environments, not to mention exploring the streets of this large gaming world.
Like all fighters, the premise is to beat the absolute crap out of your opponents using your fighting prowess, but Street Fighter 6 allows you to experience this universe with your own avatar in a mode called World Tour. This allows you to explore the city, challenge NPCs, and meet some of the greats of this series. And kicks (pun intended), you can continue customising your character—it’s basically Street Fighter meets RPG-lite.
If you’re looking for traditional gameplay modes, these are found in Fighting Ground, which offers arcade, versus, training, and ranked matches. There is also a Battle Hub that allows for online fighting, which worked very well on the NS2, including cross-platform play.
Further, fans will also appreciate the roster in Street Fighter 6, as it includes the characters from the season pass, such as Elena (Season 1) and M. Bison (Season 2), giving you access to 26 playable characters.
Capcom has even targeted some of the new features of the Switch by including a Gyro Battle mode that transforms the Joy-Cons into motion controllers, allowing you to perform moves like Daniel LaRusso from The Karate Kid. In a similar vein, there’s Calorie Battle, with both modes giving you a workout.
For “mainstream” fighting, the gameplay of Street Fighter 6 is perfect on the NS2, and in handheld mode, it is a super fun experience that allows you to play this game on the go—if you’re a fan of fighters, you’re in the right place. Additionally, tablet mode works well; however, for that big screen experience, TV mode is fantastic, especially when playing with a friend or family member.
To take your Street Fighter 6 gaming to the next level, the new Switch Pro 2 Controller is a must because it gives you more control over your character’s fighting abilities. Sure, it’s a little gimmicky, but it’s a fun way to show off your shiny new next-gen console.
Even though the PlayStation 5 is a superior console, the Nintendo Switch 2 is still a heavyweight in this department, and it really shows in this game—not just visually. Some areas did have slight frame rate issues, and the upscaling is noticeable in some parts, but all in all, Capcom has done a commendable job at porting this to the Switch 2.
Final Thoughts?
Street Fighter 6: Years 1-2 Fighter’s Edition provides gamers with a very sturdy fighting experience on this new console from Nintendo. It does suffer from a couple of graphical stumbles, and Joy-Con mini-games are more filler than content, but it’s nice that Capcom has provided a great way to showcase the capabilities of this console with their hit game.
