Secure Sound

Listening technology has come a long way, from the vintage harsh foam coverings of our headphones with the metal sliding adjustment to cushioned ear cups, through to earbuds that are more discreet, to wireless options to remove the tangles. Then there are the SoundForm ClearFit Open‑Ear Wireless Earbuds by Belkin, which provide yet another option for your listening pleasure.

When I first grabbed these, I was expecting them to sit in the ear… just a holdover from previous designs… so it did take me a little while to realise that they aren’t meant to go in your ear (good luck trying)… rather they sit over the ear and are kept in place with the handy over‑ear loop (more on that later).

Before we get into the details… here’s what Belkin has to note:

  • Open-ear design features solid bass response while allowing sound from surroundings to come through
  • Secure and comfortable fit
  • Extended battery life brings 8 hours of nonstop playtime, with an additional 18 hours of battery life in the charging case
  • Bluetooth multipoint technology for simultaneous two-device connection
  • Clear Call Quality technology reduces background noise so your voice is heard during calls
  • IPX5-rated sweat and splash resistance
  • 14.2mm drivers for consistently smooth and clear sound
  • Belkin Signature Sound delivers full, balanced high-fidelity audio
  • USB-C fast charging compatible: 10 minutes of charging gets 90 minutes of playtime
  • Seamless Bluetooth 5.3 pairing with 30 ft./10m range
  • 100% plastic-free packaging
  • Product made with recycled plastic*
  • 2-year warranty

I do quite like the charging case that the earbuds are stored and charged in. It’s compact and feels quite sturdy, providing a good sense of protection when you are taking them places or just around the house wherever you store them. I would say (like many other products of late, it seems), the supplied charging cable is woefully short. I understand they are trying to save space… but it means you need to have the earbuds charging very close to your power source. It’s not the end of the world… it just feels a bit stingy.

Set‑up was reasonably easy… they did seem to take a moment to show up in my phone’s list of Bluetooth devices… but once they did, connection was quick and simple. My stress test for them was using them whilst doing a weights workout, and I can say that they did not fall out once despite a range of different movements and angles (such as bench and vertical leg press… so my head was up to 90 degrees from upright on a number of occasions).

I would say that the touch feature of the earbuds can be a nuisance, as I accidentally paused my audio on a number of occasions when mopping sweat with a towel, I believe because my finger happened to brush the earbud and that was registered as a tap. I hadn’t read the instructions at the time but suspected it was a touch issue and didn’t manage to get them to resume play without doing so via my phone… which worked fine, but should have been possible via the earbuds (again, I hadn’t read the instructions so I may have been tapping in the wrong spot for resume).

The sound quality, though, is great… the fact that these don’t sit in the actual ear has a number of benefits. One is you won’t suffer the unfortunate build‑up of earwax (unpleasant but a reality of in‑ear earbuds at times). Another is that there isn’t really the fatigue you can sometimes get from having earbuds in your ears (or headphones on, for that matter). I didn’t find the ear loop at all uncomfortable and more or less forgot about how they were sitting and simply enjoyed the audio.

Final Thoughts:

Considering the price these are currently listed at, the level of comfort and flexibility of use (i.e. you can be quite active and not have to worry about them falling out or getting damaged from getting sweat on them), I’d say they are a great option for anyone wanting to go wireless with their listening. For a lot of my listening I still prefer to at least have the option of a wired connection… but I am more and more coming around to the benefits of wireless listening and in this case it just makes sense. Whilst I use a home gym so playing audio openly isn’t an issue… I could certainly imagine these being brilliant if I was to be out and about and wanted to enjoy my own audio without annoying others. Strongly recommended!
