Given the price, they also make for a great second pair of earbuds that offers all-round good audio, including up to 8-hours of battery life.

So before we jump into our review, check out the following highlights;

The Smokin’ Buds come with everything you need from Skullcandy that includes a charging case, charging cable and of course the buds themselves. Kudos to Skullcandy to use 100% recycling and that they are made from 50% certified renewable plastics – better for the planet!

In terms of design, they are quite unassuming with just a faint logo on each black earbud. The front of the case has an LED to indicate charging status, including a USB connection. Although they are made from plastic, the build quality is good (quite sturdy) and more importantly, they are comfortable to wear and they don’t fall out of your ear while wearing them.

Setting up the earbuds are just like any other Bluetooth device and once you have paired it with your smartphone, you’re ready to go. Navigating audio is achieved via the touch controls that does take a little time to master but answering calls, controlling music etc., is quite straight forward. For battery life, each earbud supports up to 8-hours with another 12 hours in the case to charge the buds again. The case also supports rapid charging which is great if you missed a charge and need a boost for a workout.

The audio drivers in each bud produce clear sound (a little on the lower side), however as these are entry level earbuds, you should not be comparing them to the more expensive audio device which would win hands down. While there is no noise cancellation, the earbuds have been designed for a noise-isolating fit to keep sound in. If you’re a sports person, they come with an IPX4 rating for sweat and water resistance. To tweak the audio settings, the buds come with three different EQ presets which allows you to tailor the sound such as music, movies or podcasts.

After testing these earbuds for the last few weeks, Skullcandy have done a decent job with the audio quality it produces. Audio for the most part was quite clear, particularly for music and only a slight ‘tinniness’ at times or hollowness. However bass could be better but if you’re listening to music, podcasts or streaming videos on your phone, it does a good job. Each bud also has a microphone that allows you to use the device for phone calls or online voice chats and we had no issues with that aspect.

Final Thoughts?

The Skullcandy Smokin’ Buds are an excellent entry level earbuds which provide great value for money. Ideal for those looking at a first pair of earbuds on a budget or those needing a second pair. The audio quality for the price is definitely better than similar priced products, so get them before they sell out.
