Ryan Hurst Tapped To Play Kratos In Prime Video’s God of War

Prime Video has officially found its Ghost of Sparta. Ryan Hurst, best known to PlayStation fans for his BAFTA‑nominated performance as Thor in God of War Ragnarök, has been cast as Kratos in the upcoming live‑action God of War series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, produced in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions.

The announcement marks a major step forward for one of PlayStation’s most celebrated franchises as it makes the leap from console to prestige television.

A Familiar Face Returns to the Nine Realms

Hurst’s transition from portraying Thor to embodying Kratos gives the series an actor already deeply connected to the emotional and thematic core of the modern God of War saga. His acclaimed work in Ragnarök demonstrated a strong grasp of the franchise’s tone, making him a compelling choice to take on one of gaming’s most iconic characters.

Who Is Kratos?

Kratos has been the face of God of War since the franchise began. Born a Spartan warrior and transformed into a god through tragedy and bloodshed, he has spent ten games battling mortals, monsters, and deities across Greek and Norse mythologies. Known for his stoicism, ferocity, and tortured past, Kratos has become a cultural icon far beyond gaming.

The live‑action series will follow the narrative direction of the most recent games, focusing on Kratos’ journey with his ten‑year‑old son, Atreus. Their quest to honour the final wish of Faye — wife and mother — becomes a powerful exploration of grief, legacy, and the struggle to break cycles of violence. The father‑son relationship, which redefined the franchise, will serve as the emotional centre of the show.

A Two‑Season Epic in the Making

Prime Video has already committed to two seasons, with pre‑production underway in Vancouver and casting now in progress. The series will chronicle Kratos and Atreus’ journey to spread Faye’s ashes, a pilgrimage that forces both characters to confront who they are and who they might become. Kratos attempts to teach Atreus how to be a better god, while Atreus pushes his father to rediscover his humanity.

A High‑Calibre Creative Team

The production is backed by an impressive roster of talent. Emmy Award‑winning director Frederick E.O. Toye (Shōgun, The Boys, Fallout) will helm the first two episodes, setting the tone for the series.

Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer, bringing his experience with character‑driven genre storytelling to the project. He is joined by executive producers Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis round out the creative leadership as co‑executive producers.

Prime Video Continues Its Push Into Prestige Genre Storytelling

The God of War adaptation joins a growing slate of high‑profile genre series and films on Prime Video, including Fallout, The Boys, Reacher, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and more. The platform continues to position itself as a major destination for blockbuster storytelling across thousands of devices worldwide.
