Over the last few years, Reolink has established itself as a strong competitor in the smart home space by offering high-tech, high-performing security cameras at a lower price than much of the traditional competition, including products that don’t require a subscription – we’re looking at you Ring! Cue the Reolink Altas PT Ultra that delivers 4K continuous recording paired with a 360-degree field of view for just AU$329.99.
Best of all, the Reolink Altas PT Ultra with its 4K, 360-degree pan-and-tilt capabilities operates entirely on a battery and solar setup, giving you complete property coverage without the hassle of running wires. Another impressive feature is its world-first continuous pre-recording technology which captures up to 10 seconds of cached footage before a motion trigger even occurs, ensuring you never miss those critical lead-up moments. Reolink also offers bundles and solar panel attachments to maximise your home setup and the Altas PT Ultra has also earned 17 industry awards, including “Best of IFA 2024” so as you can see, this Wi-Fi security offers some serious features.
Unboxing
As you can see from our unboxing images, the Altas PT Ultra is well-packed to ensure everything survives transit, and it comes with absolutely everything you need to get started. Holding the camera, the first thing you notice is its weight and density, proving it to be a very sturdy and professionally built product. Given the technology and features of the Altas PT Ultra, it does have a bulky build and is designed for wall or ceiling mounting, as the housing juts out significantly to provide the lens with maximum clearance. The chassis includes a large antenna on one side of the base, and a bulb-shaped gimbal that allows the camera to swivel and rotate smoothly.
Constructed primarily from durable hard plastic, the body feels solid and shows no signs of structural weakness. The camera carries an IP65 weather-resistance rating, making it resilient against heavy rain and dust storms. It operates within a temperature range of -10°C to 55°C (14°F to 131°F) and has been optimised to withstand the intense heat of Australian summers
Hardware features include a bright spotlight array positioned right above the lens to act as an active deterrent, a large speaker built into the underside of the base, a weather-sealed USB-C port for power and a rubber-protected microSD card slot on the camera bulb for local storage expansion (supporting up to a massive 512GB card natively) if you don’t have a hub. The 6W solar panel links directly to the camera’s USB-C port via an integrated cable for continuous eco-friendly charging. It’s basically setup, install and forget!
Setup
The setup process is very straightforward and first-time users of Reolink will need to download the app which is available for both Android and iOS plus create an account. Once you are in the app, you choose the “new product” option and scan the QR code to begin linking it to your local network which is made easier with its audio prompts. The app also includes an excellent tutorial on optimal placement and again cements that this software is one of the best on the market, it is clean, easy to use and allows you to seamlessly view all your other Reolink devices on the same dashboard.
Given the recent increase in local car break-ins, I positioned this specifically to protect our driveway and for the physical installation, I needed an electric drill, a Phillips-head screwdriver, a pencil, a long ladder and another set of hands for support with the entire installation taking around 15 minutes. The camera went up first, followed closely by the solar panel and Reolink gets extra points for design here as the kit comes with a clever cable tidier to keep the excess solar cord neat against the wall rather than dangling loosely. The only post-install task left was to trim a nearby tree slightly to ensure the panning motion stayed completely unobstructed … which is still pending.
The defining feature of the Reolink Altas PT Ultra is its native 4K video resolution that provides crisp, highly detailed footage during both day and night and importantly, the lens successfully avoids the severe fisheye distortion common to wide-angle security systems, making it easy to discern fine details like facial features or license plates across the driveway. The camera’s motion tracking utilizes a 360-degree pan and 90-degree tilt mechanism powered by onboard AI Smart Detection, which accurately identifies and tracks people, vehicles and pets to eliminate the majority of false triggers. Users can also program a Monitor Point that is a default home position the camera automatically returns to after a customisable period of tracking inactivity and speaking of customisation, you can also add monitor zones.
Night-time performance relies on Reolink’s ColorX full-colour night vision, and rather than relying solely on harsh spotlights or standard black-and-white infrared, the camera utilizes an impressive 1/1.8″ CMOS sensor paired with an ultra-large F1.0 aperture. In fact, this sensor is so powerful that it captures full-colour night vision without even needing to activate the built-in lights or traditional infrared LEDs—leaving those spotlights purely to function as an active deterrent. This combination allows for double the light intake and sensitivity of standard sensors, capturing rich, full-colour video even in pitch-black conditions. The resulting footage retains impressive clarity at long distances, though ambient light sources like bright streetlights can occasionally appear blown out in the final image, and street lights can be more highlighted. Further, the audio output is very clear thanks to the large base speaker on the bottom, and it reaches high volumes without significant distortion, allowing for clear two-way communication, while the built-in microphone captures adequate audio for quick conversations.

As mentioned, a major selling point of this hardware is the complete absence of mandatory subscription fees which deserves a massive woohoo from me and you. Reolink does not lock remote viewing, smart alerts or AI detection behind a paywall. Instead, video is saved locally to an onboard microSD card, meaning your data stays yours for free or alternatively, the camera can sync with the Reolink Home Hub (sold separately), which supports up to 1TB of local storage. And because storage is entirely local, an internet outage will temporarily block remote access to past footage, though physical access to the microSD card remains unaffected and end-to-end encryption keeps video private.
Also briefly mentioned is the 10-second continuous pre-recording feature (adjustable between 2 to 10 seconds, set to 10 seconds by default) and by buffering video locally, the camera captures the full context of an incident before the PIR motion sensor triggers. To support this capability, the camera is equipped with a massive 20,000mAh battery and according to Reolink, when set to continuous 24/7 4K recording, the battery lasts up to 96 hours (4 full days) on a single charge. Pairing the camera with the 6W Solar Panel 2 makes this setup completely self-sustaining, requiring just around 5 hours of direct daily sunlight to keep the continuous recording topped up. However, if configured to standard PIR Trigger Mode where it records only when motion is detected, the battery life extends to an extraordinary 500 days (based on 300 seconds of daily recording), and the 6W Solar Panel 2 requires a mere 10 minutes of direct sunlight a day to maintain an infinite charge.
The Altas PT Ultra integrates well with the app which is very easy to navigate thanks to the clean layout of all paired devices, allowing quick access to live feeds. From the live view screen, users can manually control the camera’s direction, activate two-way audio, trigger the spotlight or force a manual recording. The settings menu offers a wide gamut of customisation such as toggling the pre-recording length, adjusting AI detection sensitivity and setting continuous recording schedules for specific hours of the night or days of the week. For users of smart home integration, the camera natively connects with Google Home and Amazon Alexa for voice commands. The app makes it simple to manage your devices or securely share camera feeds with friends and family so they can watch the property while you are away.
Final Thoughts
The Reolink Altas PT Ultra is another great security product from Reolink and it is easy to love how beautifully it all ties together with their infrastructure. While it sits at a higher mid-range price point for the Australian market, its ability to deliver true 4K resolution alongside 10-second pre-recording, 360-degree AI auto-tracking, Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, long battery life and complete data privacy without recurring monthly fees provides incredible value for covering expansive outdoor properties. With easy setup, both physically and digitally that once installed, it’s basically monitors your property silently and sends you push notifications if something triggers its sensors.
