The OPPO A77 5G is a mid-range smartphone that provides excellent value for money and is priced at $499 which comes with the MediaTek Dimensity 810 SoC processor (2×2.4 GHz Cortex-A76 & 6×2.0 GHz Cortex-A55) with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Add in a 5,000mAh battery with support for 33W SUPERVOOC charging technology that fully charges your phone in just over an hour or a 5 minute charge gives you access to one hour of streaming. Additionally it supports a 90Hz Colour-Rich 6.56″ (1612 x 720) display that includes 100% DCI-P3 colour space support for true colour accuracy plus a brightness of 600 nits that makes it easy to see outdoors. Add in dual speakers, a 48MP dual camera plus a 2MP depth sensor for bokeh for portrait modes and a front facing 8MP selfie-camera plus an ultra-slim design and the OPPO A77 5G comes with everything you need for your smartphone experience.
The review unit we tested was the midnight black colour which shimmers in the light and again makes it stand out. On the right hand side of the A77, there is a smart assistant button with the volume controls on the left, including an 3.5mm audio port. OPPO also have another model at $449 that has a reduction of memory from 6GB to 4GB and storage from 128GB to 64GB, however for the extra $50 for the higher model, it is well worth the price. Lastly it comes with a case and preinstalled screen protector to help protect your investment from human related accidents!

While powered by Android 11, it comes with ColorOS 12 that improves the user experience of the A77 by giving you access to additional functionality to improve usability, including appearance by giving you 3D icons, an always on-display, easy sharing options, the ability to translate up to 100 different languages and more customisation options to make your experience even smoother. Setup is like other 2022 Android phones and when first powered on, it prompts you through a wizard that sets up the smartphone, including giving you the option of transferring information from your existing phone plus connecting it to your Wi-Fi network. It also includes all the apps you need to start from the Google Play Store, including Facebook, Booking.com, TikTok and a games mode for a more immersive gaming experience, including the ability of recording your game highlights.
So is the phone fast? After using this phone for several weeks, I found the A77 a very responsive smartphone that quickly navigated the operating system, including loading apps, surfing the net, streaming Disney+ and listening to music. The phone is fast to boot-up and I love having the 128GB of storage, including the ability of upgrading to a 1TB with an external card. This ideal for taking photos, videos and of course gaming.
In relation to gaming, we tested the A77 on a variety of titles that included Real Racing 3, Call of Duty Mobile, Lost in Blue, Rune Scape, Chrono Trigger and Arena of Valor. Needless to say, we were pleasantly surprised at how well the A77 handled gaming and while some titles ran on default settings, it was more than ample to help get us lost in that gaming moment. Casting to a TV was fast, including the option of playing games on your TV for that console experience.
We also tested the phone with 3DMARK, PCMark and Geek Bench 5 with the phone scoring where it should be as a midrange smartphone.

Photography
However for me, where this phone shined was with its photographic capabilities.
In bright light, it was almost impossible to take a bad photo thanks to the 48MP camera and 2MP depth camera which creates those portrait images where the background is blurred. Additionally it comes with some useful AI photo features to help enhance the overall picture quality. Lowlight photos did struggle at times but again, this is an issue with all smartphones, however with some tweaking and steadying, lowlight shots can still be impressive… oh, check out the picture of the fruit fly below as well, nice!

Final thoughts?
For $499, the OPPO A77 5G is great value for money that does it all. It games, it works, it streams and more importantly, it takes some great photos with my favourite images being that of the fly on the mandarin and my Dr Fate Funk Pop collectible. All in all, another great phone from OPPO.
