Summary: OPPO again prove that smart can be affordable with their new A76 smartphone.

4.4

Smart made affordable!

With a RRP of $349, the OPPO A76 provides good value for money and this smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 CPU (8 cores, up to 2.4Ghz) with an Qualcomm Adreno GPU 610 @ 1.1 GHz plus 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM with an impressive 128GB of storage. It also boasts a 6.56″ display with a HD+ resolution (1612 x 720) plus a 60Hz/90Hz refresh rate to produce sharp images and vibrant colours. Additionally it supports fast charging courtesy of OPPO’s 33w SuperVOOC charging that in 30-minutes will give you 54% charge. As you can see from the specifications, it’s no slouch with the features provided by OPPO.

Aesthetically it comes in two colours (glowing back and glowing blue) and is quite a slimline phone with a width of just 75.7mm that is very easy to hold courtesy of its 189 grams of weight. Add in a 500mAh all day battery and the A76 will definitely ensure you don’t get into a jam. From an O/S perspective, it is powered by Android 11 with OPPO’s ColorOS 11.1 that fine-tunes the android experience with a ton of customisation options, including data protection and safer charging. Unboxing

Setting up the phone is your usual Android experience and you’ll be up and running in no time. Thanks for the processor and RAM, the A76 is a fast phone while you navigate the operating system and its apps. It also comes with all the software you need to get started, including Google Play to download additional apps for your phone plus Netflix which makes the phone good for streaming films and videos. While you can’t beat headphones or earbuds, the speakers on the A76 do a good job at audio.

If you’re a casual gamer, you’ll appreciate the graphical features of this smartdevice, however if you’re a hardcore gamer, the A76 doesn’t have enough grunt for games with full detail turned on such as Call of Duty, Fortnite or Real Racing 3. However casual games such as Super Mario Run, Alto’s Odyssey and Angry Birds 2 worked a treat. In relation to those high-end games, you can still play them on the A76, however you do need to compromise the graphical detail. We tested the phone with 3DMark for Android, a graphical emulator which scored the A76 on the lower tier of smartphones. There is a also game space option that reduces background clutter and it can make a difference to some titles if it supports the game.

The screen on the A76 is fantastic that has super sharp text and images that literally pop with vibrant colours. With some scratch and water resistant protection, it also has an IPX4 rating.

OPPO also has a strong focus on cameras and the A76 boasts two rear cameras (13mP + 2MP) and a front 8MP camera for selfie fans. The cameras support all the usual modes (night, video, photo, portrait plus time lapse ,expert, performance, text scanner and a sticker mode) to ensure your photos pop. The cameras on the phone can take some impressive shots and for the most part, photography in strong light captures some stunning images with vibrant colours.

Other photo highlights include;

  • 360° Fill Light
    Shine even in dim light.
  • Backlit HDR Portrait
    Clear, natural shots whether backlit or facing the light.

Moving objects can be hit and miss and times, however we were pleasantly surprised at how good the night mode was. Check out our samples below.

Final Thoughts?

For $349AUD (April 2022), the OPPO A76 provides good value for money that for the end-user who is on a budget that does provide enough grunt plus very generous storage (which can be upgraded) to successfully become part of your day to day life. Additionally, it feels quite professionally built opposed to some of its competitors and while the cameras are not the highest megapixels, the results were impressive to say the least. Add in fast charging plus wireless charging and a 90Hz screen and again, OPPO show why they are the leader in this price bracket.
