Summary: The OPPO A5 5G comes with many bells and whistles, however just be informed that it lacks a little punch in terms of performance.

Budget whistles!

The new OPPO A5 5G offers users on a budget an affordable smartphone that boasts a wealth of features under a stylish external case. Powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset with 4GB of RAM, it comes with 128GB of storage that is also expandable via a microSD card. Further, it comes with a 6.67-inch IPS LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate, including USB-C for charging and a 3.5mm headphone audio jack. As for power, it comes with a 6000mAh battery that will definitely give most people all-day usage with some caveats of course plus it supports 45W fast-charging.

Unboxing

Aesthetically the OPPO A5 5G looks great, however upon initial inspection it does feel a little plastic so an external case and tempered glass screen protector is a must. It also has a side-mounted fingerprint sensor integrated into the power button (or alternatively Face Unlock if you prefer) that in Australia is available in either Aurora Green or Mist White for $299AUD (July 2025).

Setting up the phone is done via the wizard which allows you to copy information from your existing smartphones that include both Android and Apple which will have you up and running in no time. The smartphone runs Android 15 that allows you to access many of Google’s latest features and with OPPO’s ColorOS skin, it makes the operating system more user friendly. Once setup, the handset has everything you need to start your smartphone journey, however like other OPPO phones, it does come with a little too much preloaded bloatware apps like Temu.

Setup & O/S Gallery

.

As mentioned, the OPPO A5 5G is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset (CPU: 2x Cortex-A76 @ 2.4GHz + 6x Cortex-A55 @ 2.0GHz; GPU: Mali-G57 MC2), however the limited 4GB of RAM does pose some challenges with multitasking and certain apps can pause. This is a common theme with most budget priced handsets that does put it out of the realm of high-end gaming. Everyday usage such as surfing the net, social media, casual games didn’t miss a beat – unless you start to multitask too many apps which does slow the system down.

The 6.67-inch IPS LCD with a 120Hz refresh rate translates to HD+ (1604 × 720 pixels) is super clear with sharp text, clear images and vibrant colours. It has a brightness of up to 1000 nits (HBM) that allows it to be seen outside well in relatively full daylight with a colour gamut of 88% DCI-P3 (Vivid), 100% sRGB (Natural).  Pictures, websites, photos or videos look great on the OPPO A5 5G – the screen is great actually.

The camera system of the OPPO A5 5G features a dual rear camera system and a single front-facing camera that will cover basic photography needs

Given the price of the OPPO A5 5G, it does a decent job at photos (especially during the day) and as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words – here are samples below.

Low light

Low light performance is a little weak with noticeable noise and a lack of clarity. There’s also no ultra-wide, macro or telephoto lens plus video recording is capped at 1080p at 30fps which should be more than ample for casual users.

Final thoughts?

The OPPO A5 5G sits nicely in the budget realm of smartphones and although it is not the fastest handset on the market or even in this category, it does boast an impressive display and battery, including the ability of additional memory courtesy of an MicroSD card. So, if all the app bells and whistles are not a priority, this phone nicely ticks those boxes for users not glued to their smartphone.
