New PlayStation Portal software update adds 1080p High Quality mode and UX refinements

The PlayStation Portal just received a significant software update, addressing some of the most requested features from the community. While Sony’s dedicated Remote Play handheld has been a hit for those looking to untether from the living room TV, enthusiasts have been clamoring for higher visual fidelity and better usability. Rolling out globally from March 18, 2026, the latest firmware introduces a brand-new 1080p High Quality mode designed to make remote sessions look sharper than ever on the device’s 8-inch screen.

Sharper Visuals: The 1080p Leap

Until now, the Portal provided a solid mirroring of the PS5 experience, but variable bitrates could occasionally lead to soft edges or compression artifacts during intense gameplay. The new High Quality mode changes the game by prioritizing a higher bitrate compared to the default 1080p Standard mode. This provides a smoother and more high-fidelity experience, specifically designed to squeeze the most out of the handheld’s LCD display.

To enable this, users can navigate to the Quick Menu, select Max Resolution, and choose 1080p High Quality. You will need to restart your Remote Play or Cloud Streaming session for the changes to take effect. Sony recommends a robust high-speed Wi-Fi connection of at least 15Mbps to ensure the experience remains fluid without stuttering.

Key UX and Cloud Streaming Refinements

Beyond the pixels, Sony has introduced several quality-of-life tweaks to the interface. The update brings major improvements to the Cloud Streaming experience, including a refined Product Detail Page. When selecting a game bundle, a new UI now allows you to pick a specific title to play from that bundle directly. The search interface has also been overhauled, with the on-screen keyboard now appearing immediately when you enter the search screen for a much faster navigation experience.

Notifications have also received a boost. If you are actively streaming a title and receive a game invite, a clear on-screen notification will now appear so you never miss a session. Furthermore, Trophy notifications now display both the trophy name and its associated icon upon unlocking. Platinum trophies even feature their special animation, bringing that extra bit of celebration to the handheld. For those setting up a new device, a new QR Code onboarding flow allows you to quickly create an account or sign in using a mobile device, bypassing manual text entry entirely.

The Verdict

The PlayStation Portal was already a fantastic accessory for PS5 owners, but these refinements address the community’s primary nitpicks regarding visual clarity and interface friction. The addition of the 1080p High Quality mode proves Sony is committed to supporting the handheld as a premium peripheral rather than a niche experiment. If you’ve been holding off on a Portal due to concerns over image softness, this update significantly narrows the gap between native play and remote streaming. Just ensure your home network is optimized to take full advantage of the new visual ceiling.
