Moonlight movies

The Moonlight Cinema experience returns to the Melbourne Botanical Gardens for its December 2025 to April 2026 season, offering not only the latest films such as House Maid and Wicked: For Good, but also beloved classics including Home Alone and The Holiday. As a fun fact, this summer marks 30 years of Moonlight Cinema — and if you don’t live in Victoria, you’re still in luck, because Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide are also hosting this fantastic outdoor experience. With so many amazing films in cinemas, Moonlight Cinema is also inviting everyone to vote for the movies they’d love to see back on the big screen: https://melbourne.moonlight.com.au/the-peoples-program.

Thanks to @moonlightcinema, my family and I were given a VIP opportunity to experience Wicked: For Good in the beautiful Melbourne Botanical Gardens, and even our nearest celestial neighbour — the moon — made a perfectly timed appearance. There are three different levels of seating available: Standard ($27.50), Connoisseur Lounge ($46.00) and Singapore Airlines Gold Grass ($54.00). The main difference between them is that Standard seating requires you to sit on the grass, bring your own seating, or hire a beanbag from the venue, whereas the Connoisseur Lounge and Singapore Airlines areas come with a super‑comfortable beanbag. The latter also includes skip‑the‑queue entry, plus drinks and food delivered directly to your spot via QR code.

The Singapore Airlines Gold Grass section is also closer to the screen, and regardless of where you sit, the Moonlight Cinema staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating — they couldn’t be faulted. Another cool aspect is that you can even bring your dog, and there are special dog‑friendly beds available, which is a great touch. The organisers recommend bringing a jacket and a blanket, which we did, and Moonlight Cinema will SMS you if the weather turns. With our jackets, we were all super comfy as we watched the latest installment in the Wicked films.

As for the story, Wicked: For Good wraps up Elphaba and Glinda’s journey as Oz descends into chaos, showing how corruption, fear and politics twist Elphaba into the “Wicked Witch”, while Glinda rises in public favour. Their friendship becomes the emotional centre of the film, culminating in a heartfelt farewell where they acknowledge how deeply they’ve shaped one another before choosing different futures — with a surprising twist at the end. Pun intended, it was an even more magical experience seeing this at the Botanical Gardens under the moonlight, complete with the occasional flying bat or flock overhead.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a fun night out with family or friends, it’s hard to look past Moonlight Cinema in Melbourne, which ran like clockwork thanks to the staff. With so many films to choose from and a gigantic inflatable screen with decent speakers to accompany it, Moonlight Cinema Melbourne is definitely the perfect summer experience.
