Level up!

Happy Birthday to “Rich” Uncle Pennybags, or Milburn Pennybags (aka The Monopoly Man), as 2025 marks the 90th anniversary of the classic board game Monopoly and thanks to Hasbro, we’re celebrating with three new expansions:

  1. Monopoly: Buy Everything
  2. Monopoly: Free Parking
  3. Monopoly: Go to Jail

Needless to say, the timing is impeccable as it falls during school holidays here in Australia and if you own the board game these expansions promise crazy Monopoly fun. The premise behind them is simple: speed up gameplay and add fun twists to the classic formula.

Monopoly: Buy Everything

First up is Buy Everything. Every space is up for grabs including Go, Jail and even Free Parking. With the rotating Sale Vault, players grab special ability cards that can shake up the board.

Each player starts with $2,150 in cash and on your turn you can roll the Buy Die to snatch cards from the vault or force opponents to drop theirs. When you land on a space you can buy it at face value; if you pass it goes straight to auction like in standard Monopoly.

Rolling the Buy Die

  • Green lets you buy a face-up Sale card and the vault refills from the deck
  • Yellow lets you discard one vault card and replace it
  • Red lets you pick an opponent’s Sale card unless they negotiate to save it

Sale cards come in three colours: red for single-use powers, yellow for ongoing abilities and green for instant-win conditions. Meet the criteria on a green card and you win immediately. The game ends when someone completes a green card or when every space is owned then everyone tallies property rent values plus cash and the richest player wins.

Monopoly: Free Parking

Free Parking now offers more than a breather and has become a big deal. When you land on Free Parking you draw a Bonus card, scoop up the entire Jackpot pool and swap your token for the Deal Mobile which grants free property grabs and rent immunity.

All Chance and Community Chest spaces are replaced by Spin spaces. Land on one or spend a Spin chip you have collected to spin the wheel. You will either win special perks or add cash to the Jackpot.

You earn Spin chips when someone lands on your property instead of paying rent and you can spend them to spin on your turn. The game ends once every space is owned or a player goes bankrupt then the wealthiest player wins.

Monopoly: Go to Jail

Go to Jail is my favourite expansion as it increases the chances of heading behind bars. You go there by landing on the Go to Jail space, hitting an officer icon on an Escape die space or rolling doubles three times in a row. Once you are locked up there are no rolling doubles for freedom. At the start of your turn you can either pay $100 to the bank or stay in Jail for up to three turns drawing one Corruption card each turn.

Even behind bars you still buy properties, collect rent, trade and play Corruption cards. These cards let you bend the rules by bribing your way out of rent, swapping properties or sending rivals to Super Jail. Super Jail happens only when another player uses a special Corruption card on you. To break out you must pay $300 to that player or hand over all your Super Corruption cards. If you do not, you can sit for up to three turns drawing one Super Corruption card per turn before you finally have to pay or surrender cards to get out.

The game ends as soon as every space is owned or when any player goes bankrupt then everyone tallies their cash plus rent values and anyone still in Jail or Super Jail at the finish line is automatically out of the running. The wealthiest player wins so whether you play it straight or as a criminal the choice is yours!

Final Thoughts?

These expansions are great and provides fans of Monopoly a twist on a classic favourite!
