From Civil War Refugee to Rising Comedy Star – The Sky’s the Limit for Sam Gebreselassie and I’m a Refugee…Get Me Out of Here!
Sam was just a child in 1991 when his family escaped war-torn Ethiopia for a Sudanese refugee camp. Thanksto the UN refugee program his family found themselves settling into their new home in New Zealand in 1998. Today, Sam is one of Australia’s rising stars and is a multi-award-winning comedian and producer. Sam made his way across the ditch to share his hilariously unique origin story and outsider perspective on the world. Sam will bring his brand new show I’m a Refugee…Get Me Out of Here! at Melbourne Comedy Festival hot on the heels of debuting at the 2024 Adelaide Fringe Festival.
I’m a Refugee…Get Me Out of Here! delivers Sam Gebrelassie’s bold, unapologetic style elicits laughter while dissecting ‘uncomfortable’ subjects. Having traversed an unconventional upbringing across continents, Samuel possesses a unique lens on the world, infusing his perspective with hilarity.
From the moment Sam hit Australian shores he had audiences in stitches, in 2017 and 2019 he won the coveted Comedy Out West Open Mic Competition and 2023 has been a big year for the comedian. At the 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival, he was handpicked for Comedy Zone, a distinguished platform showcasing Australia’s top emerging comedians. Following this, his wit and humor were showcased on ABC Radio Melbourne’s Comedy Bites, where his comedic genius shone through.
Sam has performed in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s lineup show, “Neighborhood Sessions”, the Comedy Store, Comic’s Lounge, Comedy Republic, the Sit Down Comedy Club in Brisbane and the Comedy Lounge in Perth. He’s trod the boards with superstars including Dilruk Jayasinha, Ivan Aristeguieta, Peter Helliar, Tom Ballard, Dave Thornton, Tom Cashman, Lehmo, Lizzy Hoo, Claire Hooper, Ray O’Leary, Richard Stubbs and Mike Goldstein. In New Zealand, Sam has performed at The Medicine and Raw Meat Mondays in and will tour there in 2024.
I’m a Refugee…Get Me Out of Here! shares Sam’s story of his parent’s migration from Ethiopia to Sudan because of a civil war. This is a peek into the lives of migrants and their experiences in their new country of residence. No jokes are off limit, and the humor is dark and honest, as you would expect from rising star Sam. You can catch Sam at Melbourne Comedy Festival at the Chinese Museum – Team Room from Tuesday 9 April – Sunday 21 April, 2024. Tickets from $15.00 – $28.00.
