MELBOURNE’S FIRST GATEWAY TO THE COSMOS
The universe is about to get a whole lot closer. Starting July 3, 2026, Melbourne will officially become a gateway to the cosmos with the arrival of Smithsonian Starstruck: An Immersive Experience. Located at Level 1, 206 Bourke Street, this free-roam, interactive journey invites visitors to witness the birth and death of stars, explore distant galaxies, and come face-to-face with a black hole—all without ever leaving Earth.
Developed in collaboration with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO)—a pioneering research center founded in 1890—Starstruck draws on decades of cutting-edge astronomical research. The exhibition translates real scientific data from SAO, NASA, and the European Space Agency (ESA) into a fully immersive, walkable universe. Guided by “Astrid, the Cosmic Guide,” this is far more than a standard exhibition; it is an unforgettable cosmic odyssey.

Highlights of the Cosmic Journey
The 40-minute experience places visitors directly inside the story of discovery, mapping out the history of the cosmos from the Big Bang to our modern solar system. Key highlights include:
- Begin Your Cosmic Journey: Transport yourself to the summit of Mount Hopkins, Arizona, and embark on an adventure aboard some of the most powerful telescopes ever created at SAO’s Whipple Observatory.
- Dive Deep into the Hubble Deep Field: Step inside the iconic Hubble Deep Field in immersive 3D, drifting among thousands of galaxies to experience the mind-boggling scale of the cosmos.
- Visit the Old Neighborhood: Explore the Milky Way and discover our solar system’s precise place within a galaxy hurtling through space at extraordinary speeds.
- Bask in the Sun: Experience the raw power of our nearest star through real NASA data, witnessing massive solar flares and listening to the Sun’s actual vibrations.
- Explore Janssen, the Diamond Planet: Visit an extreme exoplanet made of molten lava and glittering diamond formations, while learning why Earth safely sits in the rare, habitable “Goldilocks Zone.”
- Contemplate the Death of Betelgeuse: Witness a dramatic, simulated supernova explosion and discover how dying stars create the essential building blocks for future planets and life.
- Behold Black Holes: Stand at the terrifying edge of Sagittarius A*, the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole, and observe the immense gravitational forces shaping our galaxy.
“This project demonstrates how immersive experiences can make complex scientific ideas more tangible and engaging,” says Randall Smith, Associate Director for Science at the Center for Astrophysics at SAO. “It’s exciting to see astronomical data translated into an experience that encourages curiosity and exploration.”
Science Meets Inclusivity
Starstruck blends cutting-edge virtual reality and immersive technology with authentic science and powerful storytelling, proving that humans are not just passive observers of the cosmos, but an active part of it.
Importantly, the cosmos is being made accessible to everyone. Developed in close collaboration with the Smithsonian Office of Visitor Accessibility, the exhibition incorporates comprehensive features including captions, visual descriptions, wheelchair-optimized viewing, assistive listening devices, complimentary companion card access, and dedicated monthly low-sensory days.Event Details
