Judgy Bunny and the Terrible Beach book review

Judgy Bunny and the Terrible Beach book review Dean Yamak

Summary: another good example of kids' book ready for preparing kids (and parents) for tricky dysregulation. Colourfully illustrated and sweetly written.

4/5

beach vs bunny toddler antics

Judgy Bunny and the Terrible Beach arrived just in time for the Easter holiday. Written by Scott Rothman with Linzie Hunter, our grumpy ‘Judgy Bunny’ visits the beach and manages to emulate our toddlers perfectly. ‘Too hot’, ‘too sunny’, the ball is ‘too round’. I think most parents will be able to relate to never being able to help their kid have a great time at a place they want to be.

This story hit particularly well given we live in a beach city on the easte rn Australian coast, where even on a bad weather day one of the many city beaches or coastal baths are worth a go. I can guarantee that every time we get the beach almost every minute will be full of smiles, until I hear “it’s too sandy” or something equally terrifying – and suddenly I’m trying to figure out if my Luck stat will help us get through the morning or not.

Judgy Bunny gave us a great evening scaffold to have conversations about it being ‘okay’ to not have a good time, to talk through strategies for managing hard mornings in calmer environments. It really helped how brightly illustrated the story was, giving my toddler and I visual hooks for the story. It probably helped too that both my kids are ice cream obsessed. I recommend giving Judgy Bunny a go for managing stressful moments when nothing is going to be good enough (until it is).
