Mini-gaming!

While the pandemic has interrupted the many worlds and universes of gaming, it has also grown as a platform due to the worldwide lockdowns. As repercussion, it has changed the way some of us game and if space is a premium for you, then HyperX have the solution with their all-new Alloy Origins 60 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard that is a portable 60% form factor keyboard (including full-size keys) to give your more “desk” space.

Apart from a smaller form factor, it boasts HyperX switches for increased speed and accuracy plus customisable LED lights courtesy of NGENUITY software to almost create a living breathing entity. Furthermore, it looks the part with its HyperX inspired gaming aesthetics and it’s built with an aircraft-grade aluminium body to ensure it will last all your virtual battles, including withstanding an onslaught of 80 million keypresses in the real-world.

So as you can see from the above highlights, the HyperX Alloy Origins 60 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is definitely a keyboard built for gamers.

Unboxing

The first thing that I noticed about this keyboard, once unboxed was its size and yes, it is a considerably smaller than most gaming keyboards but more importantly has full size keys and feels incredibly well-built. The mechanical switches from HyperX also feel quite good and the keycaps have been designed with durable PBT material that make it bullet-proof (ok resistant) to wear, friction and solvents. So again, it’s tough and built for gaming!

I also like how HyperX include double shot PBT keycaps with printed secondary functions on them that all you to easily recognise which keys you need to push when the action heats up. Additionally, you can adjust the keyboard to three different angles and the 1.8 braided USB-C cable is detachable. Those who want a bit more real-world customisation, the Allow Origins 60 also comes with additional keycaps plus a keycap puller to fine-tune the layout. Having used keycap pullers before, including killing a few keyboards in the process, HyperX have made the process relatively stress-free.

Setup

Setting up the keypad is a breeze and while Windows 10 automatically detects this USB keyboard, where the customisation shines is through the HyperX NGENUITY software. This software allows you to fine-tune the RGB backlit keys, including a plethora of special effects and clever lighting options. This is where you can also customise the keys, including creating macros to help give you an edge on our virtual battlefield.

Gaming

Speaking of Battlefields, I tested the keyboard with Battlefield 5, Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Apex Legends, Overwatch and World of Warcraft with this device performing quite admirably on all games. While I like to think that it improved my gaming prowess, I think it did get me an edge on speed, not to mention creating macros for in-game functionality.

After testing this keyboard, I must admit that I’m impressed with these mechanical switches from HyperX that are not only fast and responsive but give you excellent real-world feedback to know that you have pushed the correct key. It also has anti-ghosting and a key rollover N-key mode to ensure that all your keys are registered when pushed. Further to this, I also enjoyed using the Alloy Origins 60 with just everyday typing and while I might be a hack at some gaming, I’m a gun when it comes to typing and I nor the keyboard missed a beat.

Final Thoughts?

The HyperX Alloy Origins 60 Mechanical Gaming Keyboard is a well-designed keyboard that gives you a fully functional keyboard at a considerable smaller size. While the small size may surprise some, I found that it gave more room on my desk and importantly, it was fast and responsive. I also like the customisation options of this keyboard through the NGENUITY software app, including its backlit keys.

All in all a strong portable keyboard from HyperX!
