Summary: While the Huawei Watch GT 3 SE is made for Hauwei devices, it works well with other Android smartphones, however does stumble on the Apple infrastructure.

4.4

Huawei recently launched their new Watch GT 3 SE which continues to build upon the GT series of their smart watches. While aesthetically similar to their previous watches, Huawei include a new colour to the range with their “Wilderness Green”, including their more traditional Graphite Black (reviewed) model.

The watch measures at 46.6 x 46.6 x 11mm that suits wrist sizes of 140 to 210 with the watch weighing around 35.6. The watch has a 5 ATM water-resistance rating that can be submerged in up to 50 metres of water that makes it perfect for swimming. At its core, the watch monitors your physical activities (over 100), heart-rate, sleep, ability to receive notifications and even answer calls and listen to music via Bluetooth. Add in GPS and this watch definitely comes with everything you need to improve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Given the 46mm case size, it looks quite smart and would not look out of place at home, in the office or for that matter, any occasion. It also has a high quality 1.43” AMOLED colour screen that easily allows it to be viewed in all sorts of lighting.

While it has a touch screen display that is quite responsive, there are two buttons that include power and a function. Charging is also via Huawei’s wireless proprietary charging that connects into a spare USB port. According to Huawei, the battery will last up to 14-days with typical usage (1) which is quite impressive with tasks such as Bluetooth calling, heart rate monitoring and 90 minutes of workouts with GPS enabled or up to 7-days with heavy use (2) which considerably increases user input and monitoring.

For sensors, the Huawei Watch GT 3 SE boasts the following;

  • Accelerometer sensor
  • Gyroscope sensor
  • Magnetometer sensor
  • Optical heart rate sensor
  • Barometer sensor

To setup the watch, you do need to install the Huawei Health app which requires Android 6.0 or iOS 9.0 or later.

The watch works well with non-Huawei smartphones from Android and Apple, however if you have a Huawei phone, the experience is a much more connected or integrated one. While you can download the Health app via the Android store, it sidelines the update via another avenue which is interesting and this US imperative against Huawei really needs to end as it is hampering competitive technology improvements. I digress!

Nonetheless the Health app is a very easy to use program that neatly combines themes into accessible areas.

Additionally the interface on the watch is even better than the app thanks to the HarmonyOS that allows you to change the main clock face, including swiping left and right to access daily stats and other useful elements such as the weather. When you receive a notification, you simply swipe up or down to access settings and quick functions such as do not disturb, alarm or find my phone.

When you push the main button, you will have access to the full gamut of functionality of the watch from health, exercise, find my phone, settings and map to name a few of the features. There is a wide gamut of workout options such as aerobics, swimming, hiking, rower and even custom ones. Further, the watch automatically detects when you are engaging in exercises, however there is a fixed minimum of minutes for this to occur. All in all, the Huawei Watch GT 3 SE comes with a wealth of useful features from ensuring a better smart connected experience with your health and some clever notification options, including phone and music.

Final thoughts?

The Huawei Watch GT 3 SE is a very affordably priced smartphone at $329AUD (December 2022) that offers users a plethora of workable daily options. Additionally it’s a well-designed smartwatch that is super easy to navigate and monitors a wide range of physical activity. Compared to Fitbit or Garmin, all these watches have their pros and cons, including features that perform better on one model. However for its price, the Huawei Watch GT 3 SE is a contender, particularly from an Android perspective and more so, if you already own a Huawei smartphone. All in all, another clever device from Huawei that will definitely become an integral part to your life.
