Hello Halloween #1 REVIEW
A Spooktacular Ride
Jam-packed with tales of horror and spookiness, Hello Halloween #1 is riddled with creepy goodness. Created by a plethora of stellar creators, this 43-page anthology is sure to put the Halloween spirit in its readers’ bones this hallowed season. No one story in this large release pales in comparison to the others. The mastery of horror storytelling in comics is a must-read for readers who like the grittiness of Halloween.
Hello Halloween #1 is a new anthology of horror stories designed for the coming Halloween holiday. However, each story title is written by a different writer. These writers consist of R.L. Stine (Hello Darkness, Goosebumps), Robert Hack (Barbarella, Creepshow), Shawn Patrick Boyd (Hello Halloween), Megan Hutchison (A Legacy of Violence, Nocterra), and Paul Allor (Power Rangers, X-Men). Each tale is good storytelling in a short amount of time, leaving the reader wanting more of that world or its situation. As with any writer, their various styles of constructing a story that feels like any of those stories could come to life is a wonderful feeling for a die-hard horror fan. The urge to go through each tale and explain how magically horrific they are would take so long that it might literally turn a reader into nothing but bones sitting in a chair. While each story focused on different aspects of Halloween depiction, most were utterly grotesque by the end of it and were wonderfully executed in a short number of pages.
Without the help of these hard-working and talented illustrators, Hello Halloween #1 wouldn’t have come into fruition. The illustrators who give eerie graphics on these pages are Carola Borelli (The Deadliest Bouquet), Elijah Henry (Hello Darkness), and Nil Vendrell (Shirtless Bear-Fighter). The only exception of two writers, Hutchison and Hack, contributed more than just the writer than others for their own stories to the anthology. The artists in these stories did their very best to capture the intense storytelling that the comic book provides. Not only were some moments in the comic book creepy, but the excitement of what happened next was thanks to the illustrations of the artist’s dedication to the craft.
Speaking of craft, the coloring artists on this anthology gave the linework its flair of originality and appreciation for a good horror comic book. Thanks to Francesco Segala (Firefly, House of Slaughter), Jason Wordie (Ghostlore, Kaya), and Rebecca Good (Let Her Be Evil), the comic book was a blast to experience. For readers, it’s one of those comic books that call out from the shelves and say Read me, and find out what’s in store to explore. In this comic book, you’ll experience a range of emotions through the colorful layout of the various panels.
The other wickedly good part about the comic book is the various styles of letterers that helped guide the story through its journey. The letterers are Jim Campbell (Judge Dredd Megazine), Taylor Esposito (Batgirl), and Pat Brosseau (Army of Darkness, Birthright), who have given the tales in this anthology their backbone.
The cover art to Hello Halloween #1 is spooky good. Frazer Irving’s (The Avengers, 2000 AD) style art fits like a puzzle piece for this anthology.
Overall, Hello Halloween #1 is a fun read for those interested in the terror side of comic books. A perfect edition of Halloween stories in a collection to have. Readers can pick up this issue at their local comic book store or online, where copies are sold.
