Google Gemini updates on mental health work
Google has today announced an update on mental health on Gemini, reflecting Google’s long-standing commitment to bridging the gap between those in need and high-quality information and crisis support. These safeguards are rooted in clinical research and developed alongside experts to provide careful, evidence-backed support in the moments people need it most.
The update includes:
- Streamlined paths to support: When a conversation signals mental health distress, Gemini will surface a redesigned “Help is available” module to provide more effective, one-click connections to trained crisis services.
- Scaling global impact of crisis supports: A new $30 million Google.org commitment to help mental health organisations scale their capacity and reach more people globally.
- Evidence-based responses on Gemini: Sharing more on how we train our models to prioritise safety and provide responsible, clinically-grounded information.
- Specific youth protections: Designed to provide the most helpful responses to minors and avoid harmful topics when using Gemini.
You can find more information at the blog post here, together with a video conversation featuring Dr Megan Jones Bell (Director of Clinical) and Laurie Richardson (VP of Trust and Safety) discussing the updates.
